Return country to the rule of law

Dear Editor,

“A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” is observed in every state, only the name has changed.

Militias are now known as the National Guard/Reserve. The members are enlisted, trained and equipped by the federal government. They can only be called to active duty by state governors and the president. Because they possess military-style weapons ranging from sidearms to tanks and jet aircraft, these weapons are strictly controlled and stored in secure facilities.

Individual guardsmen do not have unauthorized access to these tools of war. Any citizen who is qualified can volunteer to become a member of this reserve force. The restrictions on volunteers and their equipment are as old as this country. The belief that any person is entitled to possess these weapons, without induction into a military force has never existed in the Constitution or state and federal law.

I, too, want this country to return to the rule of law, perfectly established in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
