The Democrat welcomes letters to the editor on a variety of topics. We reserve the right to edit letters for style, grammar and taste. Letters should be concise and to the point. They must be signed and include the author’s address and phone number for verification. We will accept only original letters – no form letters. Letters that do not conform to this policy will not be published. Explaining Obamacare

Dear Editor,

If Obamacare is so wonderful that Mr. Tilly can find not “one negative provision” perhaps he can explain why it must be imposed against the will of the majority of Americans.

If Obamacare is so wonderful that Mr. Tilly can find not “one negative provision” perhaps he can explain why insurance premiums, reversing a trend, spiked 9.5 percent the year after it became law and continue to rise.

If Obamacare is so wonderful that Mr. Tilly can find not “one negative provision” perhaps he can explain why insurance premiums for young people will nearly triple.

If Obamacare is so wonderful that Mr. Tilly can find not “one negative provision” perhaps he can explain why the president’s own experts say it will increase national spending 7.4 percent in 2014 and will climb at least 6 percent per year afterwards.

If Obamacare is so wonderful that Mr. Tilly can find not “one negative provision” perhaps he can explain why Medicare Advantage is cut so deeply that half of its enrollees will no longer be able to keep it.

If Obamacare is so wonderful that Mr. Tilly can find not “one negative provision” perhaps he can explain why Medicaid’s unfunded mandate to states will increase by at least $118 billion.

If Obamacare is so wonderful that Mr. Tilly can find not “one negative provision” perhaps he can explain why 16,000 new Internal Revenue Service auditors are necessary to enforce its provisions.

If Obamacare is so wonderful that Mr. Tilly can find not “one negative provision” perhaps he can explain why 1,231 companies applied for and received waivers from the law’s provisions.

From the evidence, Mr. Tilly can find not “one negative provision” not because of a lack of same but because he refuses to see what is obvious to anyone not blinded by partisanship and a deep and abiding attachment to spending other people’s money.

What democracy looks like

Dear Editor,

The right-wing extremists are still trying to sell you their issues that were on the 2012 presidential election menu. Their talking points were decided not to be what a majority of Americans who vote, and stood for hours in line, to decide.

They included many women, and minority groups and students, in which right wing politicians attempted to dictate what their personal lives, and livelihoods should be. I believe today, if a promotion of a Republican agenda is presented in any public meeting or forum, other opposing views should be given an opportunity to be heard. “That’s what Democracy actually looks like.”

People need to be able to think for their self, and decide for their self. It is quite concerning to me that 65 percent of the nation’s wealth, is held and controlled by the top 5 percent of Americans. This includes corporate CEO’s and millionaires and billionaires. This greed started under President Reagan, but became a landslide under the George W. Bush administration.

Just before Barack Obama’s first term took office, America was losing 750,000 jobs a month. Our economy was in free fall. As far those who still do not want to hear the public’s voices in some civic meetings, and religious conclaves, don’t forget what President Ronald Reagan said in 1987 to the Russian premier, “Tear down this wall.”

This symbolized government freedom for all people. Although this was in Germany, it was a move to open up the voices that had been squelched into silence for years, by the previous leader – Adolf Hitler.

NOTES FROM THE JOURNEY: Survivors are heroes, too
Recently, we attended the production of two one-act plays at Weatherford College, both under the excellent direction of Nancy McVean. The first, entitled simply “New York,” was set in a Manhattan psychiatrist’s office shortly after 9-11 as 10 different patients who had either been present at the Twin Towers or had lost loved ones in the disaster came seeking solace. Each survivor struggled with their own grief and internal conflict as the doctor listened and tried to help.
