Growing love for game bodes well for Jack
Springtown’s Christina Jack didn’t really get into basketball until she approached her high school years.
“I’d been playing basketball for a long time, but when I was in middle school, I started really loving it,” Jack said. “I started setting goals, like wanting to be on varsity as soon as I could and, to just be as good as I could.”
Along with hoops, the senior Lady Porcupine also runs cross country and plays tennis, all of which she hopes to build on in her final year at Springtown.
“I’d like to keep pushing myself in cross country. Even though I have to run it [to play] basketball, I still want to succeed,” Jack said. “In basketball, we want to go farther [in basketball], and make the regional tournament.”
While Christina’s focus is always on athletics, she has other goals set aside for off-court activities ... namely, academics. Jack is currently taking college courses along with her high school classes, and wants to keep her grades up during the upcoming semesters.
Even with all that on her plate, Jack still has down time to explore other hobbies, such as water sports.
“I like to waterski and wake board and all of those water sports,” Jack said.
She hasn’t had a surplus of time during the summer to fully participate in everything, as she prepares physically for the upcoming seasons. Basketball camps, running and performance courses occupy most of Christina’s time in the months before August.
“The biggest thing I’ve learned is that you can never give up, especially in basketball, last year,” Jack said. “We got pretty far and there were some games where we thought [the season] was over, but we ended up coming back and winning, because we had so much heart for it.”
Before a competition, Christina usually gets together with teammates and talks about goals and also says a prayer.
“I just think about what I want to do in the game, or how I want to run and what goal I want to reach,” she said. “Just some confidence-building stuff.”
The prep and confidence has suited the Springtown senior well. In her junior year, Jack was named to the District 6-4A First Team roster.
“My coaches and my parents have been the biggest influences in my life,” the senior said. “Our coaches push us to our limits and they’re always encouraging.
“They don’t just care about basketball. They also care about our lives. They make us keep our grades up and encourage us to just be better people. It’s almost like having two sets of parents.”
Before all her time ran out for the summer, Christina managed a school trip to Europe. The group visited cities such as Paris, France and London, England, among others.
“That was pretty much my summer vacation, and it was a lot of fun,” Jack said.
Some of Christina’s favorites:
Sports figure: Lisa Leslie (WNBA basketball player)
Musician: “I like all types of music but I listen to a lot of Taylor Swift.”
Actress: “I like Julia Roberts a lot, but one of my favorite movies is Enchanted.”
Food: “Any Mexican food - chips and salsa and fajitas.”
