Jackson draws walk to give Wranglers win

Spencer Jackson stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning looking for a game-winning hit, but instead drew a five-pitch walk to give the Weatherford Wranglers an 8-7 win over the Graham Roughnecks at Weatherford College’s Roger Williams Ballpark Tuesday night.

Jackson was 1-for-5 at the plate with a single and a run scored, and he also reached on an error prior to his game-winning walk.

The Wranglers entered the top of the ninth inning with a 7-4 lead after scoring five runs to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Weatherford and Graham were held scoreless in the eighth, but the action picked up in the ninth.

Wranglers relief pitcher Nich Conaway, who replaced starter Donald Furrow in the eighth, toed the rubber to start the ninth, but was only able to record one out while allowing three walks and giving up a run on a wild pitch in the inning.

Conaway gave way to Gary Poynter who hit the first batter he faced to load the bases. Poynter recorded the second out of the ninth after a eight-pitch battle with Graham designated hitter Trent Lockwood, but the Roughnecks tied the game with a two-run single by the following batter, Mitch Abieta.

Abieta finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored for Graham.

Poynter struck out the final batter of the inning, but the Roughnecks tied the game 7-7 and seemed to have the momentum after their big inning.

The Wranglers, despite losing the lead, stepped to the plate with their heads held high in their final atbats and saw the first three batters of the inning reach base safely on two walks and a fielder’s choice. Ben Tschepikow struck out for the first out of the inning, but Jackson followed with the walk-off walk to keep Weatherford in the playoff hunt.

The Wranglers do not play today, but return to action on the road Thursday in Duncanville at 7:05 p.m. before returning home Friday for their match up with the Denton Outlaws at 7:05 p.m.

The Air Force Academy recently graduated their first openly gay cadets. What does this signify?

Nothing. There have always been gay cadets, they just haven't been open.
A step backward. Sexual orientation issues shouldn't be a part of the military.
A step forward. The military needs to be open to people of all backgrounds.
No opinion.
