Weatherford rally falls short at home

The Weatherford Lady Roos made a strong push and forced a Game 5 against the visiting Burleson Lady Elks during their match up, but in the end they just didn’t have enough to pull out the win as Burleson took a 25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 26-28, 15-8 win at Weatherford High School Gymnasium Tuesday night.

Weatherford (7-13) battled back in Game 4 of the match to force Game 5 through solid team play and composure, which was something head coach Shelby Wamsley was preaching to her kids throughout the game from the sideline.

“Composure is real big in volleyball. There is so much time between serves for the girls to think about how bad they did or what mistakes they made.

“To maintain our composure and not show the other team all of that is incredible, especially for 15 through 18-year-olds,” Wamsley said. “It’s hard to maintain your composure when you get upset and you want to show your feelings, but when you’re out here you can’t do that because they’ll serve to us and hit to us.

“At this level, you can place the ball, so to maintain our composure says a lot for these girls and their maturity level.”

Game 4 was not the first time the Lady Roos had to claw their way to a win during the match.

In Game 2, Weatherford was down 18-8 before coming back to get the win 25-23.

“What can you say about that? That is just tremendous,” Wamsley said. “I was so proud of them for that. Everybody was proud of them. People in the stands, the kids ... we were so proud.

“It’s so easy to get down when you are that far down in a game. I think we were down 18-8 at one point and to come back and win it, it’s just incredible.”

Wamsley said she wasn’t sure how much of an effect the constant comebacks had on her team’s energy, but she thought maybe the court had something to do with the Lady Roos being edged out by the Lady Elks.

“Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t affect you,” Wamsley said about playing from behind. “You have that momentum when you’re leading.

“For whatever reason this [home side] of the court was just the losing side tonight. No one won over here. Burleson didn’t win over here we didn’t win over here. Volleyball, just like baseball, has a lot of superstitions.

“To come back like we did though, just fires them up. I just wish that we wouldn’t wait so long to do that. For once, it went our way, but usually when we wait that long, we get close, but we don’t put it to bed.”

Weatherford plays at Granbury at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

The Air Force Academy recently graduated their first openly gay cadets. What does this signify?

Nothing. There have always been gay cadets, they just haven't been open.
A step backward. Sexual orientation issues shouldn't be a part of the military.
A step forward. The military needs to be open to people of all backgrounds.
No opinion.
