Mansfield Timberview Wolves cornerback Anthony Gooden jumped in front of a Kyle Wilson pass to force an interception and returned the pick 70 yards for a touchdown to give the Wolves what proved to be an insurmountable 21-3 lead as the Weatherford Kangaroos fell 28-9 at Kangaroo Stadium Friday night.
Gooden’s interception brought Weatherford’s 11-play drive, that had reached the Timberview 26-yard line, to a halt. The interception was the second on the night for Wilson, who finished with just three completions on 12 attempts for 44 yards with the two turnovers.
Wilson took his position at quarterback on the following series, which resulted in a Weatherford punt, before Briley Worthington took over for the Roos.
Worthington had some success, completing 4-of-7 pass attempts for 58 yards, which included a 9-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Roland Thornhill with 7:50 seconds to play in the fourth quarter. Worthington tried to add the two-point conversion on a run after failing to find an open receiver, but was stopped short of the goal line.
Weatherford attempted an onside kick following the score, but Timberview’s Jay Tolliver pounced on the ball at the 50-yard line to give the Wolves possession.
Timberview ran seven plays on the ensuing drive, which included six runs and a pass that was incomplete, before Tolliver bulled his way into the end zone for a 10-yard score to put the Wolves up 28-9.
Tolliver’s touchdown was the second of two on the night, with his first score coming in the form of a 9-yard run in the first quarter. The touchdown was the first of the game and came just 37 seconds after the opening kickoff.
The night started rough for the Roos and the home crowd, as the start of the game was delayed 16 minutes because the stadium lighting went out. After the problem was corrected and the game got underway, Weatherford running back Willie Fielder fumbled the ball after a 7-yard gain on the first play from scrimmage.
Weatherford allowed a touchdown three plays later and tried to respond with a score of its own. The Roos’ ensuing drive spanned 12 plays and gained 56 yards in 6:28 seconds before stalling at the Wolves’ 24-yard line. Weatherford place kicker Cason Colliflower came on to try a 41-yard field goal, but failed to convert.
Colliflower did put the Roos on the board in the second quarter with a 24-yard field goal to make the score 7-3.
The Wolves made the score 14-3 on their first drive of the third quarter when quarterback Antoine Hicks worked his way through the Roos defense and raced 51 yards for the score.
Weatherford will look to snap a two-game losing streak at Mansfield Summit at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
