Brock falls to Paradise, finishes third in district

The Brock and Paradise volleyball teams met at Weatherford Gymnasium Saturday not in a playoff game, but a game just to decide who would finish second and third in District 10-2A.

After five close games, the Lady Panthers of Paradise took game five and the match with a 15-13 win.

The Lady Eagles of Brock led for most of the game, but the Lady Panthers clawed back into the lead and got on top 11-10. Both teams traded points and made the score 13-13 before Janie Foreman drove a hard shot to the court to give Paradise a 14-13 lead. Sarah Simpson gave the Lady Panthers the win on the next point when she jumped at the net and hit the ball just past the Brock defenders and into a void to notch a 15-13 win for Paradise.

“It is going to be difficult because we have a game Monday,” Brock head coach Stacie DeLaGarza said of her team preparing for playoffs after the loss. “I won’t be able to have a good long practice with them. I will get them in athletics Monday, but it’s going to be tough.

“Basically, they are going to have to come out on their own and mentally prepare.”

The Lady Eagles opened the match in dominant fashion with a 25-12 win in Game 1. Brock was sparked by an 11-point run by Carleigh Dollar to take the score from 5-3 to 16-3 before Paradise could break the serve. The Lady Panthers scratched out some points at the end of the game, but the Lady Eagles easily took the win.

There were nine lead changes in Game 2 before Paradise was able to notch a 25-22 win to tie the match at one game apiece.

Brock bounced back in Game 3 and regained control of the match by getting a 25-22 win, which put them just one game away from winning the match with two games to play.

The Lady Panthers proved they would not go quietly when they dominated much of Game 4 and knotted the match at two games apiece with a convincing 25-17 win, forcing Game 5.

“I don’t think we utilized our hitters as much as we should,” DeLaGarza said. “We’ve got some strong hitters. Actually, we didn’t utilize our hitters all five games. It hurts when we don’t use them.”

The Lady Eagles have to recover from their loss quickly as they face Henrietta in Dacatur at 7 p.m. today in the opening round of the state playoffs.

The Air Force Academy recently graduated their first openly gay cadets. What does this signify?

Nothing. There have always been gay cadets, they just haven't been open.
A step backward. Sexual orientation issues shouldn't be a part of the military.
A step forward. The military needs to be open to people of all backgrounds.
No opinion.
