The Weatherford Lady Roos soccer team used an offensive onslaught led by Hailey Crandall to notch a 3-0 win over the North Crowley Lady Panthers at Hall Middle School Friday night.
“After Summit, we really needed to pick up our game and play like we had been playing two or three weeks ago, and that’s what [Coach] Kernan told us,” said Lady Roo Laura Bailey. “We just needed to step up and we need to keep going.”
Weatherford used its offensive pressure to keep the ball on the North Crowley side of the pitch for much of the match. The Lady Roos dominated in the shots on goal category, finishing with 22 compared to the Lady Panthers’ eight.
Crandall used her speed and some good passing from teammate Daisy Martinez to score the first goal of the game in the 27th minute to get Weatherford on the board.
Crandall then helped teammate Katie Kuykendall stretch the lead to 2-0, with an assist and goal in the 44th minute.
“It felt really good [to get some early goals] because we didn’t have to worry about anymore pressure on the goal,” Crandall said. “We could just relax and play our game once we scored.”
Crandall completed the scoring in the 54th minute of the match when she took a rebound on a missed shot in front of the goal and headed past the North Crowley goalkeeper to push the Lady Roos ahead 3-0.
“I thought it was going out, but once it came back in, it was just kind of like, ‘Hey, go for the ball,’ so I went for it,” Crandall said. “It was pretty amazing to score. I was surprised I did that.”
Crandall was able to lead Weatherford on the offensive end of the pitch because of strong play by the Lady Roos’ defenders.
Bailey was an active part in the limited number of shots on goal for the Lady Panthers.
“It was very important for us [to play good defense] because if they don’t have a shot, they can’t score,” Bailey said.
With Weatherford making its way back into the win column after a road loss at Mansfield Summit earlier in the week, the Lady Roos are looking to finish the season strong and head into playoffs with momentum.
“It builds our self-esteem and helps us get ready for playoffs and everything else we’ve got going on,” Bailey said of the win.
Weatherford concludes the regular season on the road at Granbury at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday.
