Aledo throttles Crowley

ALEDO — The Aledo Bearcats scored eight runs in the bottom of the third inning to distance themselves from the Crowley Eagles and worked to a 13-5 win at the new Bearcat Baseball Stadium in Aledo Wednesday night.

Matt Nilo started the eight-run inning with a single and scored when Taylor Zambreski followed with a stand-up triple to give the Bearcats 5-2 lead. Logan Armstrong and Bobby Whan each reached on singles, which allowed Zambreski to score to put Aledo up 6-2. Blake Whisnand followed with a walk to load the bases. After an Eagles’ pitching change, another Bearcats run crossed the plate when Brandon Campbell forced a walk to push a run home.

With the bases loaded and nobody out, Joe Dearing drove a two-run double into the outfield to put Aledo ahead 9-2. Cole Loftin hit a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Bearcats a 10-2 lead, which also gave the Eagles their first out of the inning.

After five more Aledo batters, Crowley got the final two outs of the inning and returned to the plate with the Bearcats leading 12-2.

“We started hitting the ball for a change,” said Aledo head coach Greg Nelson. “We haven’t been hitting the ball real well. We hit it pretty good at Mineral Wells Monday. Tonight, we swung the bat pretty well, so that was a big difference.”

The Eagles struck for three runs in the top of the fourth inning and knocked Bearcats starting pitcher Caleb Cobb out of the game.

Aledo was able to add another run to its total in the bottom of the fifth inning, while relief pitchers Campbell and Armstrong combined to keep Crowley off the scoreboard en route to the win.

“We had a little more confidence about coming out with a clean start because we sure didn’t get off to a good start yesterday,” Nelson said of the game, which started Tuesday, but had to be replayed Wednesday because of poor weather conditions. “We were kind of flat yesterday. I guess that was because we had a game Monday night, which may have had something to do with it.

“We were a little more intense about what we were doing today than what we were last night.”

Loftin finished as the offensive leader for the Bearcats after going 2-for-3 at the plate with two stand-up triples, a ground out and a sacrifice fly. He also drove in three runs and scored one.

“He’s been doing that pretty consistently,” Nelson said. “I think he leads the area in triples, so he is just doing a good job. He’s doing what he’s been doing.”

Aledo hosts Stephenville at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Air Force Academy recently graduated their first openly gay cadets. What does this signify?

Nothing. There have always been gay cadets, they just haven't been open.
A step backward. Sexual orientation issues shouldn't be a part of the military.
A step forward. The military needs to be open to people of all backgrounds.
No opinion.
