Lady Roos close out district with 7-1 win

Weatherford shortstop Hopie Perez brought her own fireworks Friday to help celebrate Senior Night, as the Lady Roos closed out their district schedule with a 7-1 win over the Lady Pirates of Granbury. Perez finished the night with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate. The senior hit a pair of triples and a double, crossed the plate three times and added an RBI. Shawna Henderson, the only other senior on the Lady Roos roster, added a hit and scored a run in the win, helping Weatherford finish with an impressive 15-1 record atop District 4-5A. The Lady Roos finish their regular season with a 20-9 overall record.

WHS freshman pitcher Jordan Wallace paid a nice tribute to her senior teammates, hurling five shutout innings, yielding a mere two hits and striking out 10 Lady Pirates batters. Hannah Schnebley took the circle in the final two innings for the Lady Roos to collect a save.

Perez started the scoring in the second inning after hitting her first triple, pushed across by a Wallace groundout. The third inning ushered in the biggest run production for the Lady Roos, scoring five runs and chasing Granbury’s starting pitcher. Randi Tongate’s triple cleared the bases of two runners ahead of her, Schnebley collected an RBI on an error and Perez hit her double for another run. The teams traded a run over the final innings, as the Lady Pirates could not mount a viable rally against the effective Lady Roos pitchers.

Postseason arrangements have already been made for the bi-district playoff round, as Weatherford meets the Abilene Lady Eagles in Graham Friday at 6 p.m., to begin the best–of-three series. The teams will play the second game Saturday in Weatherford at noon, with a third game, if necessary, to start at 2 p.m. The Weatherford girls look to continue their winning ways deep into the playoffs. WHS finished its season with 14 straight district wins and a combined scoring edge of 74-3.

  • Aledo-Weatherford football Kangaroos, Bearcats set to renew I-20 tilt on Friday

If there was a missing ingredient to the cross-county rivalry recipe between Weatherford and Aledo prior to last year, the Roos probably added the absent spice by blemishing the Bearcats’ 2009  state-championship season with its only loss, 28-27.
