Early errors usher in rough night for Roos
Weatherford — Chances are, not too many fans from Weatherford were familiar with Vikings running back Ja’Terian Douglas before Friday night. The Arlington Lamar senior introduced himself in dramatic fashion in Kangaroo Stadium with a 273-yard running display on just 20 carries. Douglas racked up six touchdowns with runs of 7, 42, 47, 47, 35 and 31 yards.
Though the Roos were able to hold the speedy back to lesser gains at times throughout the night, Douglas and the Vikings were not to be denied as they rolled to a 72-28 non-district victory over Weatherford in a non-district contest.
“We knew that [Lamar] was very good,” said Weatherford head coach Kenny Wheaton. “They are a tough football team, but they are not that much better than us.”
The Roos spotted Lamar 16 points very early in the contest, fumbling the ball away on the second play of its first possession, allowing the Vikings a short field that they quickly took advantage of on a seven-yard jaunt by Douglas. On its next possession, Weatherford failed to get a first down and the snap to punter Colt Pike sailed over his head and out of the back of the end zone, for a safety.
On Lamar’s first play from scrimmage after the free kick by Weatherford, Douglas made his first long touchdown run of the night, scampering 42 yards. A mere four minutes had lapsed in the game.
“I told them after the game,” Wheaton said, “‘A big difference between [Lamar] and ours is mistakes.’
“They didn’t make any that I can think of. They didn’t turn it over and make silly mistakes, and that’s experience and also tradition.
“ We moved the ball really well on them,” he said, “but we need to quit putting the ball on the ground.”
Weatherford finally got on the board with its next possession after a good runback, one of several by Roos running back Chris Fielder, put the ball at mid-field. Weatherford quarterback Mitchael Rucker ran a 13-yard bootleg around left end, giving the Roos a temporary boost.Unfortunately it was temporary. Lamar outscored the Roos 21-7 in the second quarter, and in a wild and woolly third, both teams scored a blistering 21 points ina 31-second span.
Weatherford’s schedule gets no easier in the near future as it meets 2-0 Aledo Friday at Bearcats Stadium. Coach Wheaton has confidence that his boys will learn, and improve from the painful experience and be all the better for it when district play begins.
