Weatherford and Aledo continue their annual confrontation, while Millsap looks to get into the win column against Muenster and the Porcupines look to extend their winning streak to three at the expense of Eastern Hills in football action for Parker County Friday.
Aledo vs. Weatherford 7:30 p.m.
The Bearcats come off a convincing 37-14 win over Grapevine last week and will meet yet another 5A opponent as they host the Roos at Bearcat Stadium. The game represents the home opener for Aledo, a welcome relief after being on the road the first two weeks of the season.
The Bearcats had another good performance from senior quarterback Tanner McDonald, who had two rushing touchdowns, adding another pair of scores through the air. McDonald connected with Aaron Corby for 37 yards and Forrest Cook for 16.
“[McDonald] threw the football extremely well,” Buchanan said, “and he’s a threat running the ball, too, which we are glad to see.”
Supplementing Aledo’s running attack last week was Joel Hasley, who added 128 yards to the ground game on 20 carries.
“We’ve always known Joel was a good offensive threat,” Buchanan said. “The problem is, he’s also one of our best defensive players and we don’t want to wear him out on offense. Last week we wanted to see what we could do with him, and how well he would hold up.”
Snubbed in the preseason polls by he supposed experts, Aledo showed up after the win over Stephenville and moved up again in the rankings this week.
“We talked to the boys at the beginning of the season about not paying any attention to the newspaper [rankings],” Buchanan said. “If you’re playing in December, you had a good season. What you were ranked in August really doesn’t matter.”
Millsap at Muenster 7:30 p.m.
Take away the Millsap mishaps early in the game last week against Rio Vista and the Bulldogs win the other 46-plus minutes of the contest. Unfortunately, the whole game always counts as Millsap dropped its season opener to the Eagles, 20-14.
“We played pretty well after that first minute and a half,” said Millsap head coach Kyle Coker. “We just couldn’t overcome the 14 points they got early.”
The Bulldogs were led by quarterback Trey Matthews, who put up some good numbers in the contest. The senior quarterback passed for more than 200 yards on 13 completions, and added another 26 running. Jacob Young was Matthews favorite receiver in the game, collecting three passes for 56 yards and a touchdown.
Turnovers proved to be the difference in the game as the Bulldogs fumbled five times, losing three and were tagged with two interceptions.
Coker says the boys are in good spirits, healthy and looking forward to playing a more error-free game against 1A Muenster on Friday.
Springtown vs. FW Eastern Hills 7:30 p.m.
Porcupines’ head coach Brad Turner readily admits that the mood on the practice field is vastly different than it was the previous season, when Pojo was staring an 0-2 record in the face instead of facing the prospect of winning its third straight Friday night, which just happens to be Homecoming Night. Springtown dominated WF Hirschi from the start last week, winning 40-6, with a pick for a touchdown by the Huskies late in the game preventing a shutout. Still, the coach acknowledges the need to stay grounded and focused to cope with the early success, but feels his kids have the right chemistry to do so as they face the Highlanders Friday.
“Eastern Hills is very similar to the teams we’ve played,” said Turner. “They are very athletic and have a lot of team speed.
“They do some things differently on the defensive side that will be new to our sophomore quarterback [Caden Cowan]. But we’ll deal with that.”
With starting running back Dylan Gathings exiting the game early after 88 yards rushing last week, Xavier Sanchez filled in nicely, gaining 114 yards on 21 carries.
“Dylan has great vision and sees the cuts,” Turner said, “and he’s hard to bring down.
“Xavi [Sanchez] hits the hole way faster and it’s just a different look, and we put them both in the backfield some, in our two-back set, and I think we’ve found something there.”
Springtown will also be looking to find another win Friday when they host Eastern Hills.
