WEATHERFORD — Taking care of business is what it’s all about for Roos’ players and coaches during the off week before district play resumes, October 11 at Abilene. And it’s not just about studying football.
“The number one priority is to get their tutorials taken care of and give them time to get their academics squared away,” said Weatherford head coach Kenny Wheaton.
“Yes, healing up is a huge thing. We are banged up after a tough [four week] schedule. We also have to get back to fundamentals and basics for every position.”
The Kangaroos, 1-4 on the year, but 1-0 in the ultimately important district standings, begin preparation in their down time for Abilene, meeting the Eagles for the first time as a district foe. The perennially tough Abilene team will be a large challenge for the Roos, as they try to turn past fortunes around. Weatherford lost to Abilene in last year’s bi-district playoff round.
Although coming off victory against Paschal last week, Wheaton knows there is lots of work to do, but is heartened by the success of the past week, particularly in the running game and the performance of junior Mitchael Rucker. Starting the game alternating series between Rucker and Chris Jackson, the Roos went with what the Panthers gave them.
“We saw real fast who [Paschal] was going to let carry the ball,” Wheaton said. “It was the fullback, so that worked out well for us.”
Adjustments will certainly be needed during the Abilene confrontation as well, but this week, and next, the Roos will rest, get healed, and continue to get smarter ... with the text books and the play books.
