Home cooking ahead for Parker County triad
The three Parker County teams playing football Friday are glad they will be on home turf, for reasons that may vary. Aledo, Springtown and Millsap all had road games last week, reason enough in itself, to relish familiar surroundings as they tackle their respective opponents.
Aledo had arguably the best road experience, knocking off Brewer. The outcome of the contest was never in doubt, as the Bearcats led at the end of the first quarter and continued to distance themselves from the Bears throughout, winning 49-7.
“Tanner [MacDonald] had a very good game,” said Aledo head coach Tim Buchanan. “We were very pleased with his performance.”
The Bearcats did not have to go to the air that often, but were very efficient when they did. At quarterback, McDonald completed 11 of 14 passes for 175 yards. Significant of the aerial attack is that there were no interceptions.
The defense pitched a three-quarter shutout, allowing Brewer a single touchdown in the first period. In 20 attempts, the Bears could only muster 59 yards on the ground, as they were forced to take to the air to try to generate offensive production. The Aledo defense, through pressure on the quarterback and tight coverage, held the Bears to a 35 percent completion rate, snagging an interception in the process.
A welcome addition back to the lineup on defense was junior linebacker Danny Heiss. Senior running back Austin Stockon, who had 3 carries for 22 yards, also got back into the fray. Both players suffered injuries prior to the season openers, with Heiss being hurt at the end of two-a-days and Stockon during drills last Spring.
“They both got about 10 snaps against Brewer and we’ll probably double that this week,” Buchanan said.
Aledo hosts Boswell Friday, and Buchanan feels that the Pioneers may come to Bearcats territory with a bit of swagger in their gait after an impressive outing against Springtown last week.
“They should be confident,” Buchanan said. “They held Springtown to 14 points and [Springtown] has one of the leading offenses in the area.”
Still, Boswell will have to try to repeat its success in the confines of Bearcats Stadium. No easy feat, if history is any indicator. The District 6-4A contest is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
Springtown was the team on the short end of the Boswell offensive burst last week, and will be more than happy to get back to Porcupines Stadium, playing host to Mineral Wells Friday. The Porcupines lost to Boswell, 46-20.
“We felt pretty good about only being down 16-14 at halftime,” said Springtown head coach Brad Turner. “The kids were real confident about making adjustments and coming out to play the second half.”
A disastrous beginning on the kickoff and a couple of safeties later, the Porcupines were only down by six. But plagued by poor field position, Pojo’s defense was left vulnerable.
“I was not at all upset by the way our defense played, considering the short fields we were giving them,” Turner said.
Despite producing 330 passing yards, 142 of those to wideout Rhett Ballard, mistakes kept Springtown out of the end zone with the needed frequency, giving up two fumbles and an interception.
Hosting the Rams Friday Turner is quick to point out the significance of the opponent.
“Mineral Wells has lost something like its last 13 games, but I remember who their last win was against,” Turner said. “And the year before, as well.
The Rams beat Springtown 31-14 last year, and Turner acknowledges that the Porcupines’ defense will need to gear up for Mineral Wells’ triple option, an offense that they rarely see. Pojo will need to stop the run, but at least the turf they will be defending will be their own.
Millsap will be back home for the ultimate affair… Homecoming Night. After a come-from-behind win last week against the Perrin-Whitt Pirates, capped by a Brady Fluitt scoring fumble recovery, the Bulldogs look to face an even stiffer challenge in the Era Hornets.
“Our boys played hard for four quarters last week,” said Millsap head coach Kyle Coker. They showed that they could be 'overcomers,' and I think that says a lot about their character.”
The visiting Hornets are 5-0, not only impressive by virtue of the absence of defeats, but also that the Hornets have played half their season already, with a bunch of reps behind them.
“[Era] has not been held to under 32 points all year,” Coker said. “They have a good quarterback and a lot of good skill players.”
At home, and at homecoming in its new stadium, the Bulldogs will look to add another win to its 3-1 record. The game represents Millsap’s last non-district game on its regular schedule. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
