ABILENE — ABILENE — The Kangaroos caught a break early in the contest with the state-ranked Abilene Eagles, Saturday at Shotwell Stadium, recovering a fumble while covering a punt, and turning the good fortune into a touchdown. Never mind that Weatherford’s extra point attempt was partially blocked and unsuccessful, the Roos were on the board first, taking the gift at the 50-yard line and crossing the goalline eight plays later. Colton Kamper did most of the damage on the drive, with runs of 9, 19 and 3 yards, the last one achieving paydirt.
After Abilene scored on an efficient six-play drive of its own, Weatherford returned the miscue favor on its next possession, when an errant option pitch was scooped up by an Eagles lineman and returned 36 yards. Just before the end of he opening quarter, the Roos put together another nice drive, culminating with a 4-yard jaunt by Roos slotback Shawn Roberson. Another blocked PAT left the score at 14-12, Abilene.
The turnover beast reared its ugly head in the second period, as Weatherford gave the ball away twice more in the first half. Abilene was rolling with enough efficiency without any help from the Roos, who added another pair of lost fumbles in the second half. The Eagles, taking advantage of the Roos miscues through the rest of he contest, scored 49 unanswered points to deal Weatherford its first District 3-4A loss of the season, 63-12.
