WHS cross country teams fare well at district meet, send runners to regional

The Weatherford cross country teams competed in their district meet at Tarrant County College’s northeast campus, Saturday.

The boy’s team had a great day, with seniors Aaron League and Holton Hemby leading their team to a third-place finish, which qualifies the Roos to compete at the regional meet in Lubbock this weekend. In addition, League and Hemby were individual qualifiers as well, finishing in fifth and sixth places, respectively.

The varsity girls competed well, as freshman Mackinsey Flores came away with a seventh-place finish to qualify for the regional meet.

The junior varsity boys completed their season as district runners-up, with points scored by sophomore Jake Jarvis, finishing third, and juniors Curtis Hard and David Colemanin ninth and tenth, respectively (10th). Sophomore Caleb Ferguson took twelfth and senior teammate Hayden Berkley placed nineteenth.

Overall, the Weatherford teams brought home two team trophies and 10 individual medals.



Lady Coyotes open season at New Mexico tournament

Staff Report

The Weatherford College women’s team began its 2008-09 basketball season with a road trip to New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs over the weekend.

The Lady Coyotes dropped the opener Friday, falling to Cochise College, 81-74. On Saturday, WC lost to host New Mexico JC, 75-61. The women’s home opener is scheduled for Tuesday, hosting Trinity Valley. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.



Weatherford junior varsity edges Panthers

The Roos JV beat North Crowley in dramatic fashion Thursday, 30-29. Weatherford’s Skyler Bursch blocked a punt in the first quarter to set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Hayden Trimble. Zach Butler scored three touchdowns with runs of six, six and three yards. Chris Sanders and Joe Ward each converted 2-point conversions. The Roos defense badly needed a stop with 1:10 left in the final period with the Panthers threatening. Hunter Livingston came up with a big hit causing a fumble that was scooped up by Dustin Donaldson to seal the Roos’ victory.



Volleyball playoffs continue for Parker County schools

Staff Report

The WHS girls play Arlington High Tuesday night at Burleson High School, at a time to be determined.

In other volleyball playoff action for Parker County teams, Aledo (34-6) meets Wichita Falls Rider Monday, 7 p.m. at Decatur High School, while Springtown (23-17) faces The Colony at Trinity High School at 7:30 p.m.

Brock draws Henrietta Tuesday at Bridgeport High School, at 6:30 p.m. District 9-2A champ Peaster (36-2) enjoys a bye in the first round.
