Roos top Aledo, 58-32
Taking a 13-3 lead into the second quarter against Aledo Tuesday, the Roos pace of scoring did not change, as they rang up another 13 points before the half, but the Bearcats tried to stem the tide, applying a full court press with mixed results. The ploy did grant Aledo a few more possessions in the quarter and they made good on some of those, finding the range from beyond the arc to pull to within eight points by the break.
Ultimately, Weatherford’s rule in the paint was the deciding factor in the contest, as the Roos took advantage of their height to dominate the boards, winning 58-32.
“You can’t measure what the size does for you,” said Weatherford head coach Terry Ferguson. It’s a huge advantage and Roy [Zwerneman] plays well, too.
“I tease him a little bit. He was a seventh grade C team player, and he’s come a long way. He’s a force inside and it’s tough when you don’t have someone to match up with him.”
Zwerneman finished the night with 19 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots. The leading scorer for the Roos was Zenas Barrow, who scored 13 of his total of 20 points in the second half.
Aledo was forced to put up most of its point production from the perimeter, which worked well in the second quarter. Aledo’s leading scorer on the night was Colton Culberson, with 10 points, guarded most of the night by the Roos’ Josh Ware, who held Culberson below his season average.
The Bearcats shooting cooled in the final period, managing just six points while the Roos scored 19, their most productive quarter.
With the win, the Roos varsity improves to 2-2. The boys head to the Gene Messer Ford Shootout tourney Thursday through Saturday, returning to play at Azle Tuesday.
