Brock's cagers prove to be aggressive guests at Millsap

MILLSAP — Brock’s teams traveled to Millsap Tuesday, and didn’t forget to pack their defense before leaving. The Eagles and Lady Eagles won handily in both District 9-2A contests against the Millsap squads.

The Brock girls allowed just a single basket in the opening quarter, as the Lady Bulldogs struggled to get the ball inside against the taller Lady Eagles defenders. Down 30-8 at the half, Millsap gave a better showing after the break, slowing down Brock’s scoring, but were not able to make up enough ground as they fell to the Lady Eagles, 49-22.

“We came out in the third quarter and held them to eight points, which was a small victory for us,” said Millsap head coach Jackie Jeter. “We know the Brocks and Peasters are going to be tough and we just have to stay focused and take them as they come.”

The Millsap boys had a slow start as well, Tuesday, but closed at the end of the opening period, down by only four points heading into the second quarter. Brock’s defense, always tough despite their lack of heighth inside, tightened the reins on the Bulldogs’ offense in the second, forcing turnovers and extending its lead, ultimately winning the contest, 55-31.

“I’m basically a defensive coach, so we are always going to be aggressive on defense,” said Brock head coach Jeff Bell when asked if there was more of an emphasis on defense with this team.

Both teams continue district play on Friday as the Brock teams host Alvord and Millsap’s squads travel to Paradise.

When Jeff Lightfoot started the Weatherford College baseball program almost a decade ago, he wasted no time in building a winner — and fans have gotten used to the Coyotes being a part of the postseason.

So with the start of each season comes high expectations, all with the hopes of getting that elusive first Junior College World Series berth. Lightfoot has a JUCO World Series title as a coach at Eastfield College in Mesquite in 2001.

Groomed on the diamond for the past four years by WHS head coach Terry Massey and assistant Jason Lee, senior Trooper Reynolds confirmed his scholastic and athletic intentions at the next step on Friday, signing a national letter-of-intent to Weatherford College.

Softball era begins at WC
The crowd on hand Saturday at the Weatherford College Softball Complex was already standing-room only for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, a full 30 minutes before the first pitch was thrown to open the inaugural regular season of the WC Lady Coyotes softball team. Fans and well-wishers were strewn from the concessions mezzanine behind the first-base line, through the packed stands and even into the Lady Coyotes dugout.
