Aledo throttles Chaps

ALEDO —

It’s always nice to get a Homecoming win, and the Aledo Bearcats did just that Friday, while padding its District 7-4A lead after thumping O.D. Wyatt at Bearcat Stadium, 45-9.

Within two minutes of kickoff, Aledo found itself lighting up the scoreboard when quarterback Pate Davis’ 31-yard run set up a 9-yard score by Jess Anders. A Chance Nevarez kick made it 7-0 at the 10:04 mark.

While the final score may have been one-sided, the Chaparrals had their chances early, driving the ball to Aledo’s 7-yard line to set up first-and-goal on their first series.

But a 10-yard penalty and two incomplete passes later, Wyatt went for it on fourth down, coming up a yard short to hand possession back to the Bearcats.

“We knew they had good athletes, and that they all had the potential to outrun us,” Aledo head coach Tim Buchanan said. “Early on, we made some mental and some physical mistakes, but we were able to fix the problems.”

The Chaparrals would force Aledo to a three-and-out on the next series, but could not capitalize, and the Bearcats increased their lead to 14-0 on a 3-yard scoring run by Caleb Frysinger.

After another Anders score, this time from 7 yards out, the Bearcats regained possession after picking off Ladell Marshall’s pass at their own 25.

Pushed back on a penalty, Aledo was forced to punt, but an errant snap gave Wyatt its only points of the first half on a safety.

The Bearcats held steady though, coming up with a key stop on fourth-and-one. The turnover on downs would lead to an Aledo score when Davis found Quanel Williams from 18 yards out, and Aledo took a 28-2 lead into halftime.

The third and fourth quarters proved fruitful for the Bearcats, yielding two more touchdowns and a 24-yard field goal by Nevarez, while allowing Aledo to explore its bench and get alternate players on the gridiron.

“We had some of our guys that we put in in the first quarter,” Buchanan said. “They all performed well.”

With the win, Aledo is now 5-1 on the season, and 3-0 in district play, outscoring its district foes 139-11.
