On Saturday, Jan. 28, the first edition of the Weatherford College Lady Coyotes softball team took the diamond for their first-ever, regular-season game. The program began on a good note, as WC beat the Northeast Community College Lady Eagles at the newly-christened WC Softball Complex. 8-6
Aledo’s Johnathan Gray may have been finished running through opposing high school defenses by 2012, but his assault on local, state and national awards did not slow in January. Shown here after receiving U.S. Air Force recognition for the nation’s top football player, Gray also took (among others) Gridiron Legends Player of the Year, ESPN’s Mr. Football and after being named Gatorade’s State and National Football Player of the Year, was subsequently chosen as the National Male Athlete of the Year by Gatorade. Gray attends and plays football for the University of Texas.
The Brock Lady Eagles basketball varsity makes it four state titles in a row on Saturday, Mar. 3, beating Winnsboro, 47-26. With the varsity since her freshman year, senior Kamy Cole put an exclamation point on her high school basketball swan song, scoring 21 points and claiming the Most Valuable Player trophy. A week later, the Brock boys made their trip to Austin, beating a talented San Antonio Cole team before losing to White Oak in the final.
Bob McKinley hit a major coaching milestone Saturday, Feb. 6. Weatherford College’s athletic director and basketball coach picked up win number 800 as the Lady Coyotes and Coyotes swept Temple College. He is pictured with his wife, Dee, son Trey McKinley, daughter Traci McKinley, and grandchildren: Evelyn Benson, Tommy McKinley, Alex Benson, and Hyatt McKinley.

> The UIL realignment shook up the districts for virtually everyone, except Weatherford, who had no changes other than their district designation... from 4A-5 to 3A-5.

> WISD held a ceremony to retire the Weatherford jersey No. 12, in honor of former student-athlete Zach Britton, who is the first Weatherford grad to pitch in the major leagues.

>WISD Exec Athletic Director Philip O’Neal left the district for a position at Fort Bend ISD.

WISD CommEd Boys basketball — Spring League 5th-6th-grade winners announced
The WISD Community Ed Department offers a spring basketball league to area boys and girls. The offering is a developmental league to better prepare players for future school sports. The Spring Season came to a close recently, with a tournament held at Hall Middle School.
