WHS doubles up Lady Vikings

Beating Arlington Lamar by a single point in their first meeting, the return match proved even better for the Lady Roos, who improved to 5-3 in District 3-5A competition Tuesday with a 52-44 win over the Lady Vikes. Led by Abbye Shearmire (18 pts) and Lou Hawkins (16 pts.), Weatherford owned a 9-point advantage after one quarter and never relinquished the lead. The WHS girls return to the road Friday, facing Arl. Houston.

 

Roos drop decision to Lamar

Staff Report

Tony Rodriguez and Ryan Merrill led Weatherford’s varsity cagers with 13 and 11 points respectively on Tuesday, but the Arlington Lamar Vikings held down the stretch for a 55-44 win. WHS’ Lawson Priess and Jason Kuritz also added seven each. The Roos look for their first district win on Friday, traveling to play Arlington Houston. 

 

Brock girls top Millsap; at 7-0

Staff Report

Braylee Flaska and Lexie Ducat reached double figures on Tuesday, with 14 and 13 points respectively, as the Lady Eagles beat Millsap in district action, 64-28. Cora Jenkins followed with nine, Taylor Fulmer had seven, while Kylie Ducat, Taylor Wallace and Rachel Williams each added six each. Millsap freshman Hannah Hobson led the Lady Bulldogs with nine points. 

Brock hosts Paradise while Millsap draws a bye Friday.

Monarch boys, girls remain undefeated with Santo wins

Poolville’s varsity girls stormed back from a 12-point half-time deficit on Tuesday to beat visiting Santo, 46-45, in a District 11-1A basketball match. The Lady Monarch’s Tracy Johnson led the comeback with 22 points, while Heather Henson added 11. Poolville improves to a 3-0 district mark.

Poolville’s boys (2-0) took care of business early on in the nightcap, leading by more than 20 points into the halftime locker room. A dominate third quarter increased the margin,  resulting in an eventual 78-36 rout over Santo’s Wildcats. Nine Poolville players got into the scoring act, with Alex Rodriguez leading the Monarchs with 16 points. Coy O’Boyle and Jonathan Arbuckle also reached double digits, with 12 and 10 respectively.   

 

JV, varsity Roos sweep DeSoto

Staff Report

Weatherford soccer teams won a pair of non-district matches in DeSoto on Tuesday. The junior varsity boys came back from a goal down to notch a 2-1 win. Dustin Wilson fed Alex Orduna for the tying goal, and Carlos Trevino dribbled past the goalkeeper to chip in the winning shot.

In varsity action, the Roos blanked the Eagles, 2-0, with solid midfield play. Senior   Will Graham scored first with an assist from sophomore Jose Hernandez. Roberto Garcia capped the night, stealing the ball from a DeSoto defender and outrunning the defense to put the ball past the keeper.

    Weatherford High School head tennis coach Keeley McLarty will be hosting a meeting for the parents of incoming ninth-grade tennis players on Thursday. The hour-long gathering will begin at 6 p.m., and be held in the Outback classroom.

Of the 13 players named to the roster, all but three are underclassmen, boding well for the district champs to remain at the top of the heap for years to come.

The Lakers bats came out blazing, as they put up four runs in the first two innings.
