Lady Roos crunch Arlington Houston

Using a 27-4 scoring advantage in the second quarter, the Weatherford varsity girls’ bench was active on Friday, getting lots of playing time as the Lady Roos routed Arlington Houston, 66-36.

Abbye Shearmire (19 pts) and Lou Hawkins (15 pts) led the way offensively, with Aidan Pool adding a dozen points. WHS improved to 6-3 in District 3-5A play with the win. The Lady Roos travel to play district-leading Arlington Bowie on Tuesday.

 

Kangaroos notch first district win

Staff Report

Weatherford and Sam Houston alternated hot quarters on Friday in Arlington, but the Roos came out on top, holding off the Texans in the final quarter to claim a 42-39 District 3-5A victory. A 19-point third quarter for WHS proved to be the difference in the contest, while holding Houston to just four points.

Jason Kuritz and Tony Rodriguez led the scoring for Weatherford, with each recording 10 points. Collin Boswell followed with nine.

Weatherford returns to the road to begin the second round of district play, taking on Arlington Bowie at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

 

Bearcats bounce back, top South Hills

After falling to 2-4 with Tuesday loss to Arlington Heights, Aledo gained a step back toward evening its District 7-4A record, beating the FW South Hills Scorpions,  68-46. 

Eleven Aledo players put up points in the win, with Taylor Johnson leading all scorers with a game-high 26 points. Two other Bearcats recorded double figures, as Carl Williams and Kyle Gromann put up 15 and 10 points,  respectively.

Aledo faces another test on Tuesday, hosting FW O. D. Wyatt (7-0). The match is set for 7:30 p.m.

    In a Class 4A, Region I quarterfinal softball match in Odessa on Friday, the Aledo Ladycats drew first blood, scoring a run in the top of the third inning to break a scoreless tie.

    Aledo’s young women go west this week, seeking additional fortune in the state softball playoffs. The Class 4A, Region I semifinal series will match District 7 champion Aledo against the District 1 winner El Paso Chapin’s Lady Huskies, who eliminated Plainview in two games last weekend.
