Harvey commits to Williams Baptist

—

By GREG WEBB

Weatherford High School’s Jordan Harvey proudly admits to earning her ticket to attend college and play volleyball at the next level. Hard work, on the court and in front of the computer, paid off for the senior, who celebrated the signing of a national letter of commitment at The Outback on Thursday.

Harvey will attend and play volleyball at Williams Baptist University, which is located in Walnut Ridge, Ark. In the fall, Harvey will satisfy her long-time goal of playing at the college level, one she has had since she began playing the game in the fifth grade.

After a self-described “gruelling” process that temporarily had the setter-position player second-guessing her efforts (but not her talents), Harvey received the right e-mails.

“I received my first ‘bookmark’ [from a recruiting website] last year, right after a regional tournament I played in,” she said. “The [WBC] coach e-mailed me and I went out to for a visit a few weeks later.”

A subsequent visit confirmed Harvey’s first impression.

“I loved everything about it — the campus, the coaches, and I got to meet the girls, too,” she said. “The coach told me I was the kind of player he was looking for.”

Shortly after returning home, WBC coach Eric Newell sent the offer, which Harvey excitedly accepted, feeling she had found the situation of a mutual benefit for her and the college.

Jordan plans to major in biology, to pursue yet another goal she has had for most of her life.

“Ever since I was little, I have always wanted to be a [veterinarian],” she said. “And that’s never changed. So I will get my biology degree and then go to grad school in a veterinary program.”

Harvey takes on a passionate tone when describing the reason for her future vocation.

“I always felt bad for animals I saw who were abandoned or abused,” she said. “I want to be that person who can help make a difference in their lives.

“They don’t have a voice to speak their pain.

One of Jordan’s concerns geographically, was to not be too far away from home, and her family atmosphere, and even though WBC is located in the northern part of Arkansas, there are enough familiarities to find a fit in Walnut Ridge.

“I have always loved Arkansas, and I have family up there, too.”.
