WC softball dominates Cowtown Classic

Staff Report

FORT WORTH – To say the Weatherford College softball team had a good weekend would be an understatement. The Coyotes won all six of their games at the Cowtown Classic, hitting 16 home runs and outscoring their opponents 61 to 15.

WC (7-1) began with a 9-0 win over Western Texas on Friday, and followed that up with 12-3 wins over both Connors State and Odessa.

On Saturday, the Coyotes beat Eastern Oklahoma 9-1, had their biggest test of the weekend with a 9-7 win over Trinity Valley, and dominated Bossier Parish (LA) 10-1.

WC pitcher Bailee Wortham threw a one-hitter against Western Texas, allowing no runs while striking out seven over five innings.

Two Coyotes recorded grand slams:  Samantha Alegria against Connors State and Luci Ponce against Odessa.  Ponce, a sophomore from San Jose, Calif., finished the weekend with three homers.

The Coyotes play at Northeast Texas in Mt. Pleasant Tuesday.  Their home opener will be Wed., Feb. 20 against Paris Junior College at Stuart Field.

Lady Coyotes dominate conference stats

Staff Report

The Weatherford College women’s basketball team is still tied with Collin atop the conference standings, but there’s not much competition in the individual statistical rankings. WC currently has the top three scorers and the top three rebounders in the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference.

In scoring, Lady Coyote guard Bre Brooks leads the NTJCAC with 17.7 points per game, Itiana Taylor is second at 16 PPG and JohVonna Darrington is third at 15.7 PPG.  WC also dominates the rebounding category with the top three of Taylor (10.8 rebounds per game), Cleyder Blanco (10.3 RPG), and Darrington (9.5 RPG).

Brooks leads in steals as well, tied with Collin’s DeAmber Brice with 3.0 per game, and Darrington is third with 2.7.

WC’s 79-43 win over Southwestern Christian Saturday gave Bob McKinley’s squad an 8-1 record in conference play. The Lady Coyotes will travel to Hill Wednesday night and then host Cisco at home Saturday at 2 p.m.
