Area varsity sports slate — Week of Dec. 17

WEATHERFORD —

More area basketball teams join the district-competition fray this week, with the Weatherford Roos hosting Arlington Bowie to begin District 3-5A play on Tuesday. Aledo’s varsity boys also open up their District 7-4A slate this week, traveling to play the O.D. Wyatt Chaparrals on Tuesday. The Ladycats also host Wyatt in a rare Monday-night contest.

The District 9-2A boys get into the act as well, with Brock and Millsap opening district play on Friday. Peaster  draws a bye in its district schedule, but will travel to play in a non-district contest with Holliday on Friday, opening its district slate against Boyd in the new year.

Poolville and Springtown boys’ and girls’ teams, by virtue of their relatively small districts, will begin the “important games” in January as well. But Poolville will celebrate its Homecoming on Friday night, while hosting Windthorst for JV and varsity boys’ and girls’ games.

The weekly events schedule will expand early in January, with Weatherford, Aledo and Springtown soccer teams beginning non-district and tournament schedules after the turn of the year. Springtown, who was reclassified to 3A last February, opted to continue its soccer programs and will be joining Aledo, Azle and Mineral Wells (also a 3A school continuing its program after dropping from 4A) in District 12-4A, with four other schools.

The Weatherford College basketball teams are done for the calendar year, but will open conference play upon their return to action in January.
