Weatherford routs Sam Houston, 75-43

The Lady Roos varsity basketball team welcomed an evening like it  had on Friday, routing the Arlington Sam Houston Lady Texans at Weatherford High School, 75-43.

At 2-0 in District 3-5A play, and notching its seventh win in a row, the intensity of the past several games for WHS gave way to a contest allowing head coach Darryn Shearmire to empty his bench and coast to a win.

"It' s nice to have a night like this,” Shearmire said, “and especially after the six tough wins we’ve had lately, with a few of those being overtime, double overtime and all the controversy that went with some of those wins."

Weatherford’s first district game, against Arlington Lamar, was anything but a walkover, as the Lady Roos had to fight back from a second-quarter deficit, forcing overtime before finally edging the Lady Vikes for the win.

"Sometimes, after a tough game like [the Lamar win], it can be hard to come back and play with the same intensity,” said the head coach, who is in his second year leading the Lady Roos. “But we were able to get up early tonight and the girls had a lot of fun.”

Senior Lou Hawkins had a special night in the win, recording her first triple-double on the year. With 16 points, 11 assists, and 14 rebounds, Hawkins kept the Houston defenders scrambling to cover her open looks, often foiled when she dished to open teammates.

Since the spring, when Lou was released [from knee surgery] to start practice, she instantly made us better,” Shearmire said of the 5-9 forward, “and she has continued to get better.

With her skills and leadership, she helps elevate the play of the rest of the team. And the way she can dish the ball as well as score, she just makes us go. The game likely would have had an even bigger margin of victory had Shearmire concentrated on stopping Houston’s Duffey, who finished as the game’s top scorer, with 31 points. But, staying in their zone defense, the Roos jumped out early in the match (up by 37-14 at the break), and were never threatened.
