A new sport, a good friend

WEATHERFORD —

Weatherford residents Abbie Lane and Carissa Barnes are spending at least some of their summer on the sand, but not necessarily at the beach. Lane, 9, who attends Seguin Elementary and Barnes, 11, of Austin Elementary, signed up with Club Texas Volleyball for their first year of organized sand volleyball. Club Texas pairs up its players into teams, resulting in Lane and Barnes competing as a unit in the 12U Division. The volleyball duo have become fast friends and play their matches on Thursday evenings at the sand courts in Santo.

Aledo Ladycats move to Region I final with sweep past EP Chapin
In Game 2 of a Class 4A, Region I semifinal softball match in Odessa on Saturday, the Aledo Ladycats eliminated El Paso Chapin with a 12-6 win. The Ladycats bats heated up early in the match, scoring a pair of runs in the first frame and following up with another three in the seond.
