Moughon headed to Hall

WEATHERFORD —

John L. (Coach Moe) Moughon will be inducted into the Weatherford High School Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, at the Jerry Durant Auditorium.

Moughon is remembered by most as a great coach of the Weatherford Kangaroos, and the one who started the baseball program at WHS. But preceding his landmarks as a coach, Moughon was an outstanding athlete and student at Weatherford High School.

Moughon’s high school days saw him playing three sports, but excelling most  in football. He was the starting quarterback for the 1946-47 Kangaroos. He also ran track and played basketball. The 1946 basketball team won 2 and lost 10, but beat Jacksboro and Cisco to win consolation honors in the Parker County Basketball Tourney. The following year was a little better with a record of 5-13.

The 1946 football season began with a 6-0 loss to the Mighty Mites of Masonic Home, but WHS bounced back with victories over Jacksboro, Bonham and Arlington. In Moughon’s senior year, the 1947 fortunes in football changed.  The Moughon-led Roos opened with a 38-0 win over North Dallas, following with wins over Bonham (27-0), Arlington (13-0), and Quanah (27-7) before losing to arch rival Mineral Wells, 20-6. The Roos bounced back with a 12-0 win over Cisco before facing a tough Breckenridge squad. For the first time in the history of the two teams, Weatherford won, pulling out a 25-20 victory over the Buckaroos. An 18-7 win over Stephenville followed for the Roos before Brownwood stung them in a 7-6 squeaker. Moughon’s team closed out the 8-2 season with a 32-0 win over Ranger.

Moughon was listed as the outstanding player in the Bonham, Arlington, Quanah and Mineral Wells games. John was listed in the Melon Vine as Senior Class Favorite and a member of Los Hidalgos and Hi Y.

Upon graduating from WHS in 1948, Moughon was offered a scholarship from Texas Tech University, where he played quarterback for the Red Raiders for four years. Tech finished as the Border Conference Champs in 1950-51 and played in the post season with an appearance in the Sun Bowl in 1952.

Upon graduating from Tech, John joined the Marine Corps and served his country in Korea, in the 1st Marine Division, and six more years in the Marine Reserves.

Coach Moughon made his coaching debut in Mt. Pleasant, where he coached for seven years, with his team earning a state semi-finals berth in 1958. In 1962, John took a job at WHS and returned to his home town to coach football, basketball and baseball. He served with fellow Weatherford coaching legends Sammy Morrow and Bill Atchley, guiding the Roos to bi-district in 1964 and all the way to the state semi-finals in 1965. The ‘65 team was inducted into the WHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.

After coaching in Weatherford for six years, John went into private business with his family, where he remained until he retired in 1995.

In 2010, John and his wife, Judy, received the Distinguished Service Award from the Weatherford Independent School District, where they were public school educators. Judy taught for 28 years in Mt. Pleasant and WISD.

The Moughon’s just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
