Area cross country news - Heading to regionals

WEATHERFORD —  

 

Cross country district meets held last week yielded various levels  of success for area varsity teams and individual runners. Regional qualifiers will head to their respective meets on Saturday.

 

District 9-2A 

 

The District 9-2A Cross Country meet was held in Alvord. 

The Brock varsity boys won the team title by one point, marking the fifth-consecutive year to win  the district title, and advancing to the regional meet. Aaron Farris ran fourth overall, with Dillon Cox running fifth. Sheldon Mowery took 10th, with Aaron Gassner   at 15th place and Dustin Cox at the 16th spot. Caleb Guyon was unable to finish the race due to illness, but will join the team at the  Region II meet, to be held in Arlington 

The Brock girls finished fourth  as a team, narrowly missing a  chance to qualify for regionals.  

Millsap’s varsity girls put in a strong effort at the district meet, placing second in the team standings, just three points behind district winner Paradise High School. The second-place finish  qualifies the Lady Bulldogs’ team for the regional meet on Saturday. 

Senior Haley Younger crossed the finish line ahead of the field, winning the overall individual district championship. Senior Mikelyn Kruger placed second in the meet, with freshman Sydney Herbel completing triad with a third-place finish.

The Millsap varsity boys have a pair of representatives who will run at regionals. Senior Bobby Nolen placed second overall in the meet, while junior Jaxon Martin also finishing strong in sixth place.

The Peaster boys team took the second-place trophy while also reserving a team slot at the Region II meet.

David Buchanan was the  District 9-2A boys champion. Cameron Schult and Will McIlroy crossed the finish line in seventh and eighth, respectively for the Hounds.  Draven Tell took 14th, Cresten Sledge, 21st and Parker Grudt and    Asa Menchaca rounded out the Peaster finishes at 25th and 26th.

 

District 7-4A

 

Both of Aledo’s cross country teams earned a trip to the Class 4A Region I meet, to be held in Lubbock on Saturday.

For the boys, Colby Caldwell finished second, with Hunter Owens finishing in fourth. Rounding out the Aledo field,  Michael Meadows medaled in sixth place, with Gage Chamberlain finishing eighth.  Zach Morrow finished in 12th place. 

The varsity Ladycats team tied with Arlington Heights for first place. Gillian Law finished second, just three seconds behind the leader. Kandace Canaday followed Law with a third-place finish. Lanie Payblas and Alex Farrington added points to the team total with sixth and seventh-place finishes, respectively. Roundin out the top 10 were  Amy Larson, who took ninth place and the 10th-place finisher, Becky Owens.

 

District 3-5A

 

Weatherford’s district cross country meet was held last Thursday, at Joe Pool Lake and featured a large and highly competitive field.

Lady Roos runner Ronni Middleton had a fourth-place finish for Weatherford, earning a  spot at the Region I meet, to be held in Lubbock on Saturday.

Other finishers for the girls were  Cassandra Kirby (35th), Cheyenne Barfield (38th) and Jessie Opella (39th).

Tyler Jones led the Weatherford boys team (27th), followed by  Quinn Wright (43rd), John Bessire (46th), Seth Cooke (47th), Jordan Simmons (48th), Travis Lynch (53rd) and Brandon Cashion (55th).

    The Aledo Ladycats used a 2-out, 2-run rally to complete a walk-off win in the first game of their Class 4A Region I semifinal series against El Paso Chapin on Friday.

    The Weatherford ISD Community Ed volleyball program for girls ended the spring league with a tournament on Saturday. Community Ed had record numbers in their spring league and hope to continue growing this fall when the league resumes. Girls from surrounding towns are welcome to participate in this preparatory (not select) league.

Of the 13 players named to the roster, all but three are underclassmen, boding well for the district champs to remain at the top of the heap for years to come.

    Faced with a 1-0 deficit in the game count of a Class 2A Region II best-of-three series with Mt. Vernon after Thursday's 7-2 loss, Brock Lady Eagles softball rebounded with a vengeance on Saturday in Game 2.

The practices culminated with the annual Blue-White Spring Game.
