WEATHERFORD —
Taking 15 track & field athletes to the state Region 12 meet at the University of Texas at Arlington recently, the Weatherford-based Mach I track club did quite well, as a third of the athletes qualified for the 45th USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships. The five Mach I TC athletes qualified through preliminary, association and regional competitions to earn a spot at the Nationals.
Two Mach I runners, Michael Meadows and Graydon Morris qualified to compete in the 1500-meter run, with times of 4:40.28 and 5:20.09, respectively. Meadows competes in the Youth boys division, which consists of 13-14 year-olds. Morris advances in the Bantam division of 9-10 year-old age group.
The other three qualifiers from Mach I were in field events.
Hunter Smith, also competing in the Youth field, cleared 2.59 meters to earn a spot in pole vault. Matthew Gray qualified with a 1.2-meter leap in the PeeWees. Competing and qualifying in the Intermediate boys group, Garrett Hadley hurled the discus 38.55 meters.
Nationals will be contested July 26-31. The Mach I Track Club is seeking sponsors to help support the athletes’ trip to Wichita. Contact Antonio Torres at 817-253-9770.
