With a night full of activity in and around Kangaroo Stadium on Friday, the biggest, and certainly most raucous crowd could be found at WISD’s Ninth-Grade Center, where the Peaster and Brock varsity boys met to play a basketball game. Any time the established rivals meet, fireworks ensue, and with extra incentive on the line, a dramatic stage was certainly set.
Sharing the District 10-2A basketball title, the contest to decide who would take the top seed into the state playoffs took the on the air of a much more important game, as in settling unofficial bragging rights to the shared crown.
The packed stands produced a gymnasium full of noise from both sides of the court throughout the match, though Brock took the early lead and held onto it, winning the rubber match between the two squads, 48-34.
The first few possessions of the game set the tone for the duration, as the Eagles closed down inside passing lanes while also dogging the perimeter, effectively shutting down Peaster’s long-range shots in the opening quarter.
Brock’s first seven points of the game, scored in the opening two minutes, represented the only points of the contest until the Greyhounds’ Josh Davis finally answered with a bucket with 1:58 remaining in the period. Peaster worked some good looks from beyond the arc, but could not connect until Grant McCullough’s late-quarter shot. Meanwhile, the Eagles built their total to 11 points to take a lead into the second quarter.
Peaster spent much of the second quarter trying to discover chinks in Brock’s defensive armor, with limited success. But the Greyhounds defense also tightened considerably in the period, limiting the Eagles to six points during the span.
With all the earmarks of a district championship on the line, the two teams battled, with the Eagles holding the advantage throughout, gaining a margin of 15 points by the end of the third period after Peaster had shaved the lead down to five early in the quarter.
Brock’s most potent weapon on the night was Kanton Wood, who finished with 14 points, making eight of those in the third period during Brock’s most prolific run.
Peaster’s Caleb Davis also had 14, all of those coming in the second half. Davis, who found the 3-point range twice in the final period, scored all but two of the Hounds fourth-quarter points.
With the win and the top seed heading into the Class 2A, Region II bracket, Brock earns the bye and await the bi-district winner of the Gunter-Leonard match, set for Tuesday. The area round will be played on Thursday or Friday, at a site and time to be determined.
Peaster’s playoff march begins Tuesday, when they travel to Bridgeport High School for a bi-district match against Ponder. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
