Lady Roos drops early lead to North Crowley

Despite loss, Weatherford girls inherit fourth seed in playoffs

The formidable home crowd gathered at Roo gymnasium on Tuesday had their feel-good mood from the Senior Night festivities extended, as the Weatherford Lady Roos were the picture of efficiency from the tip, in their District 3-5A match against North Crowley.

Steals, fast breaks and deadly accuracy prevailed early, with the WHS girls bolting ahead to a 19-7 lead after one quarter.

The Lady Panthers gained some composure in the second period, finally catching, and passing the Lady Roos for a 46-40 win.

Turnovers and free-throw woes plaguing North Crowley in the opening stanza became the second-half bane of Weatherford, as the Lady Panthers took their first lead of the night with three and a half minutes left in the third — a lead they would not relinquish.

Abbye Shearmire’s hot hand in the opening half propelled her to 17 points, as the game’s top scorer, but the Lady Roos could not recapture the dominance they enjoyed in the first quarter.

Though not the way they wanted to earn a playoff spot, Arlington Lamar’s loss to Arlington Martin handed WHS a berth on postseason play. The Lady Roos will likely meet Southlake Carroll in bi-district play, at a date and time to be announced.

Aledo Ladycats move to Region I final with sweep past EP Chapin
