After winning on Thursday and Friday at the Brewer Invitational girls’ varsity basketball tournament, over Burkburnett and Everman, the Lady Roos continued play on Saturday in the championship bracket.
The Weatherford girls had little trouble brushing aside Alvarado in the first Saturday game, leading the Lady Indians 34-7 at the half en route to a 53-24 win. Lou Hawkins led the scoring for WHS with 14 points, with Abbye Shearmire also in double digits, adding 12. Aidan Pool and Kelsey Allen added nine apiece.
In the championship game, the Lady Roos again jumped out to an early lead, up by eight points on Irving Nimitz by the end of the first period. WHS kept the pressure on, beating the Lady Vikes, 52-41, to win the tourney title. Hawkins and Shearmire again led the scoring for Weatherford, throwing in 13 and 18 points, respectively.
WHS head coach Darryn Shearmire had high praise for Hawkins, who was selected to the all-tournament team. Hawkins, a senior, has missed out on the last two seasons of basketball with knee injuries.
“[Hawkins] went out each game, dominated on the glass and in and around the paint, iced down her knees and came back for more in every game,” Shearmire said of the Lady Roo post. “I don’t think you can find a tougher, classier yound lady anywhere.”
The Lady Roos travel to play at Grapevine on Tuesday, then take off a week before beginning District 3-5A play at Arlington Lamar.
