Bowie outpaces Roos in opener

WHS girls late charge falls short in first district loss

WEATHERFORD —

The Bowie Volunteers basketball team is very talented — and very deep, and the  Weatherford varsity boys were made well aware of the fact on Tuesday, at Weatherford High School. The Roos fresh defense at the beginning of the District 3-5A match put up a good battle, hoping to keep the overall game score at a modest level.

But resistance inside pushed the effort to the perimeter, and behind the dead-eye shooting of the Vols’ Jeremy Senglin, Bowie soon increased the margin, headed for a 82-32 district-opening win.

While Senglin, the game’s high scorer, sat out the fourth quarter, the Vols emptied their bench, displaying a their depth and keeping fresh legs in play.

The Kangaroos, although  stripped of some of its depth with injuries, nonetheless kept their energy high to the final buzzer, but were plowed under in the final period, only able to muster a couple of free throws to counter the Bowie rush.

Junior post Ryan Merrill fought on the inside and logged 10 points as the Roos top point producer on the night.

Senior guard Lawson Priess added eight for the Roos and junior Collin Boswell chipped in six.

The Roos try their hand on Friday against another Arlington team, traveling to meet the Arlington Martin Warriors, with a 7:30 p.m. start.

Though trailing the whole game, the Lady Roos kept the game in doubt for the Arlington Bowie Lady Vols through the fourth quarter. A few misplaced layups and errant passes in the closing minutes foiled completion of the Weatherford comeback, as the WHS girls dropped its first district contest, 45-40.

Down by just eight points entering the final quarter, tough rebounding and an active defense pulled the Lady Roos within four points with as many minutes left in the game. The Lady Roos made opportunities to close the gap, but suffered some spotty shooting down the stretch.

Abbye Shearmire held the hot hand for Weatherford in the fourth period, scoring 14 points to keep WHS in the game. Shearmire finished the night as the game’s top scorer, pouring in 25 points.

The Lady Roos (2-1) try to get back into the win column on Friday, taking on Martin High in Arlington.
