WHS volleyball teams sweep Crowley

Staff Report

The varsity Lady Roos defeated Crowley in three games Friday, 25-22, 25-20, 25-18. Caroline Plowman led the offensive attack with 10 kills, while Susie Wirtanen added six. Ashley Reinert served up eight aces and Susie Wirtanen aced five. Calen Bratcher had nine digs to go along with Reinert’s five. Jordan Harvey had 11 assists, while Reinert added 10.

The Lady Roos improve to 10-8 on the season and are home versus Keller Timber Creek on Tuesday. The WHS girls travel south to San Marcos for a tournament next weekend.

Weatherford’s ninth-grade A-team also defeated Crowley in two games, Friday, while the junior varsity girls also dominated Crowley with a two-game sweep.

 

WHS junior varsity teams split openers

Staff Report

The Weatherford JV White football team kicked off the season with a victory over Azle Thursday, at Roo Stadium, winning 28-6. Shawn Reed and Bryce Naydan scored two touchdowns apiece. On defense, Ben McConnell, Dillon Lyman, Cody Bradley each had an interception, while Drake Sadberry recovered a fumble.

 The WHS JV Blue team played Haltom City in the second game, losing a heart-breaker, 32-28. The Roos went into halftime with a 19-6 deficit, but came out strong in the second half, scoring 22 unanswered points. The JV boys could not hold off Haltom in the final two minutes, falling short of a victory.  Jacob Catlin had a interception and Tanner Bielder had a fumble recovery for the defense, while Brock Riebe, Wil Mallory, Andrew White and Wil Thomas scored touchdowns for the roos.

 The JV teams will play Burleson next Thursday at Roo Stadium. Game times are set for 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

 

Ninth-grade Roos lose to Haltom clubs

On Thursday, the ninth-grade WHS football teams traveled to Haltom to take on the Buffs. The B-team started the game strong, but fell short, losing 14-0. As the A-team’s game unfolded, the Roos found themselves up 7-6 at the half. Unfortunatley, the Buffs rallied late in the final quarter, defeating the Roos, 14-7.

 

Aledo JV outduels ‘Jackets

Staff Report

Racking up nearly 450 yards of offense, Aledo’s junior varisty A-team outlasted Stephenville in an offensive battle Thursday, 45-26. 

Aledo quarterback Pate Davis had 282 all-purpose yards, completing 10 of 14 tosses for 118 passing yards, while gaining 164 yards on the ground and scoring two rushing TDs. Running back CJ Lane-Floyd added three rushing touchdowns, and was the game’s leading rusher, grinding out 150 yards on 21 carries.

Aledo’s defense stifled the Yellowjackets running attack, forcing them to the air, where they threw for more than 300 yards.

Defensively, Chase Ozee had two interceptions for Aledo, while Payne Davis recoverd a Stephenville fumble.

 

Springtown girls dominate early, take second at Team Cup

Staff Report

The Lady Porcupines swept through pool play Friday, at the IAD Facility in Carrolton, winning all three matches. Springtown topped Garland in the first match, 25-15, repeating a sweep of Rockwall in the second, closer  match, 25-23, 25-22. The SHS girls clinched the pool championship with a 25-17, 25-17 rendering over Carrolton-Farmer’s Branch Newman-Smith High.

In pool play, Hailey Henderson led Pojo with 35 digs over the three matches. Kendall Hayes had 61 assists over the span, while Anber Tedder racked up 24 kills. 

On Saturday, Pojo won its first match in the Gold bracket, beating Rockwall Heath in two matches, 26-24, 25-21, and earning a spot to vie for the championship. Tessa May had 19 digs and Kendall Hayes had 16 assists.

In the final match, the Springtown girls never found the momentum they had enjoyed throughout the tournament, dropping two matches to The Colony, 14-25, 13-25. Hailey Henderson had 13 digs and Hayes added nine more assists.

The Lady Porcupines hold a post tournament season record of 16-4 on the year. 

 Springtown’s varsity travels to Denton Tuesday to take on Denton High in a non-district match. The freshman and JV girls will also make the trip, beginning at 5 p.m.

    WHS soccer evens district record with win over Lamar

    Staff Report

    The Weatherford High School boys soccer teams traveled to Arlington to take on Lamar in District 4-5A play. In varsity action, the Roos came out focused and sharp offensively, scoring three goals early en route to a 5-2 win. The Roos took the game by a final of 5-2.

  • WC Gigi Weatherford College cagers in mix at conference mid-point

    While Saturday's wins over Temple College by the Weatherford College men and women provided Nos. 759 and 800 in the record book for WC head coach Bob McKinley, they also provided a boost for the Coyotes squads as they head into the last half of North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) play.

  • Wford FB - Realignment New designation, same foes for WHS

    Despite rumblings of a major shake up in the Class 5A infrastructure for the next two years, the University Interscholastic League (UIL), for good or bad, chose indifference regarding plans to create a Class 6A. As alignments for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 UIL seasons were announced Thursday, most area schools were affected in varying degrees, but none less than Weatherford High School.

    Not to be outdone by the Lady Coyotes late-inning heroics in their opener last week, the Weatherford College baseball team had plenty of drama in its opener, as well, as it launched a final-inning 3-run barrage to beat defending national champion Navarro College, 8-7.
