Season start for other sports in the new year

WEATHERFORD —

Three days of holiday tournaments provided area prep basketball players with another healthy dose of game play and coaches another chance to fine tune offensive and defensive schemes. Local teams traveled as near as Aledo and as far as Florida for last vestiges of tournament and non-district play.

The new year brings a few more respective district seasons to bear in the coming week, turning to full tilt in the first full week of January.

The turn to 2013 also provides the kickoff for new seasons, as soccer teams ramp up their slates in January. The Weatherford boys travel to Mansfield to take on Lake Ridge in its opener, while the Lady Roos head the opposite direction, playing at Abilene.

Bearcats and Ladycats soccer begins with an exhibition display Saturday, with the boys’ and girls’ varsity teams playing against past Aledo players in an alumni game, set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.

Weatherford College starts back up on Thursday, with the men and women traveling to play Midland in non-conference matches. The teams will host another match on Saturday before cranking up conference play on Jan. 12, hosting McClennan.
