WEATHERFORD —
Each August, prep football teams take the field for their first workouts the very same day the University Interscholastic League (UIL) allows prep volleyball teams to take to the courts. But while the gridders have to wait four days before donning pads, the spikers will already be seeing unfamiliar faces across the net.
The Lady Roo volleyball teams will travel to Mansfield in a 3-way scrimmage against host Summit and Burleson Centennial to kick off their 2012 season on August 10. After another scrimmage at neighboring Aledo the next day, the Weatherford girls begin their non-district schedule in earnest against Mansfield Lake Ridge.
Designed to cram a lot of repetition into a short period of time, especially for the varsity squad, the pre-district tournaments will mix with single matches throughout the final two weeks of August, with the Lady Roos will make their annual trek south to play in the San Marcos varsity tournament.
September 7 marks the District 3-5A opener, with Weatherford visiting Arlington Sam Houston in the home-away district schedule, which will conclude at Arlington Bowie deep in October. Senior Night will be on Oct. 19 in the Lady Roos final home game of the season, facing Paschal.
Roo fans will see a new face on the court leading the Lady Roos, with Natalie Wayman taking the reigns of the WHS volleyball program. Wayman lands in Weatherford after spending the past two years in east Texas heading up the program at Canton ISD. Assistant coaches Mason Kuettel, Lesley Cathey and Sheryl Bradford will be helping Wayman in bringing the Lady Roos up to speed with her system.
