Aledo holds off Hanks for state berth

Playoff Basketball — Parker County cagers net 7-0 postseason mark for weekend

After building a 14-point lead by the middle of the third quarter, the Aledo Ladycats had to hold off a charge by El Paso Hanks’ Lady Knights on Saturday, in the Class 4A, Region I finals in Snyder. Hanks fought back over a six-minute span to tie the score at 35-all.

Aledo overcame the shock of the comeback, trading leads for the balance of the final period before putting the El Paso team away, with a 50-48 win.

Senior Mallory Powell led the scoring for the Ladycats with 19 points. Justis Szczepanski-Beavers added 10.

With the dramatic victory, the Aledo girls head to Austin on Thursday to play in the semifinal match at either 7 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. against an opponent yet determined at press time.

The Ladycats earned their berth in the regional final with a stellar performance over Canyon on Friday, beating the Lady Eagles, 54-31.

Powell was again the spark for the Aledo offense, with the senior leading the way to a 17-point output by the Ladycats in the second quarter. The defense also took hold, limiting Canyon to just four points while the District 7-4A champs enjoyed a 15-point advantage going into the halftime locker room.

Powell punctuated the win in the final couple of minutes, stroking a long-range basket for three and draining a pair of free throws to cap off her scoring for the game at 24 points.

Kaylee Black added 10 to the effort, with Szczepanski-Beavers scoring eight points while also controlling the defensive boards.

Greyhounds move on

Peaster completed the hat trick Friday, for boys’ teams from District 9-2A still in the playoff mix. The Greyhounds held on to beat Whitesboro in a close match, 49-46.

Peaster advances to the Class 2A, Region II quarterfinal with the win over the Bearcats, and will meet a familiar foe in the next round. Ponder will need to rest up after surviving a double overtime match against Sunnyvale.

The Hounds gave Ponder all it wanted in the teams’ second district meeting, taking the Lions to double OT in a 53-52 thriller.

The regional quarterfinal contest will be played on Tuesday at Decatur High School. Start time is to be determined.

Poolville enters fray, wins

The Poolville Monarchs completed the Parker County teams’ playoff sweep of the weekend. Entering the playoffs after earning a bye in the initial round, Poolville outlasted Seymour to win the Class 1A, Div. I Area match, 48-43.

Head coach Steven Stegall’s squad advances to the regional quarterfinal,  earning a postseason date with Stamford at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, playing at Cisco High School. Stamford topped Chico on Friday, 67-50.

Brock quarterfinal match set

The Eagles earned its next bracket slot on Thursday, blowing past Farmersville, 52-34. Brock’s next-round opponent was established on Friday, with District 10 champ Whitney beating Leonard.

The Class 2A, Region II quarterfinal match is to be decided on Tuesday, when Brock meets the Wildcats at Glen Rose High School. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
