Warriors whip Weatherford

Early Roo errors dig insurmountable hole

ARLINGTON —

ARLINGTON — As if the stiff and steady norther was not troublesome enough in the face of the Weatherford Kangaroos during their first few possessions Friday, at Cravens Field in Arlington, the Arlington Martin defense was just adding to the misery. But even when the quarter, and the wind changed, the Warriors ‘D’ did not let up as the Roos fell hard in a 59-7 loss.

Already deep in its own territory and struggling to get a drive going, mishaps on punt attempts cost Weatherford on field position and subsequently, the scoreboard, granting Martin a short field to work with.

With the Arlington team piling up 442 yards of total offense, favorable starting locations for the Warriors was not conducive to the Roos’ plan to make Martin earn every yard.

Led by University of Texas commit Kyle Hicks’ four touchdowns in the first half, Martin finished the contest with two 100-yard rushers in Hicks (6-108) and Nick Smith (8-102).

The speedy Martin backs chewed up several chunks of yardage on reverse-field running, after the Weatherford defense jammed up the originally-intended route. Having trouble keeping the Warriors off the corners proved to be a recurring theme on the night for the Roos.

Weatherford’s lone scoring drive came in the third quarter (operating with the win), and culminating in a 21-yard Colton Mallory pass down the middle of the field to wideout Tony Rodriguez.

Strapped with a 42-point deficit at the half, the Roo offense had trouble getting momentum, hindered by a few fumbles and the threat of a couple more.

But despite the rushing wind and the rushing Warriors, the WHS boys displayed energy at the latter stages of the game, just as they had from the opening kickoff. Martin’s talent and the Roo miscues proved to costly and frequent to overcome.

Still looking for its first district win, Weatherford (0-2, 1-4) returns home for the next two weeks, hoping home field and Homecoming (Oct. 19) will produce better results. The Roos tee it up against the Arlington High Colts on Friday with game time set for 7:30 p.m. The Colts beat Arlington Lamar on Friday, 50-17.
