Former Lady Roos cager to be inducted in WHS HoF

T’Nae Theil has been selected for induction to the 2009 class of the Weatherford High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Upon arriving in Weatherford, Thiel made an immediate impact on the Lady Roos’ athletic program. Playing for basketball coach Phil King, Thiel was named Texas’ Class 5A Player of the Year and the district’s Most Valuable Player. She averaged 20 points and nine rebounds per game on a Lady Roos team recording a 29-4 mark and winning the district championship.

Thiel was named All-American by ESPN, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and Parade Magazine. In April of 2001, T’Nae played in the Phoenix Women’s Coaches Association High School All-American game, played in Hartford, Conn. Thiel scored eight points, had five rebounds and three assists in 25 minutes of play.

In the 2000 All-Junior Olympics, she led the Texas Best team to a tournament title and was named MVP. Also, in 2000, she participated on a European tour with the Texas Best in Austria, Switzerland and Italy.

When Thiel graduated from WHS, sixth in a class of 386, she was awarded a full scholarship to play basketball at Stanford. She was a four-year started from 2001-2005. T’nae ranks tenth in the Stanford record books with 671 career rebounds. She was instrumental in helping the Cardinals to back-to-back NCAA Elite Eight appearances, in 2004 and 2005. Thiel was also named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman team in 2001-02.

Thiel received a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from Stanford in June of 2005. She is currently living and working in San Diego.

Theil’s mother is Aricka Thiel, a former counselor at WHS and now a counselor at Allen High School. She has a brother, Tanner, and a sister, Teagen.

The Weatherford Athletics Hall of Fame will have it’s sixth annual induction ceremony Saturday, Oct. 24, in concurrence with Weatherford High School’s homecoming. The festivities begin at 3 p.m. at the Jerry Durant Auditorium on the Weatherford High School campus.
