Everybody scores in Weatherford win over Arlington

The Lady Roos ran out to a 25-3 first quarter and never looked back in their 67-22 victory over the visiting Lady Colts from Arlington High. Mack Lankford had 15 and Ashley Bosley had 14 in the winning effort that saw ten different players score and all twelve on the varsity contribute. The Lady Roos will play in the Northwest Tournament this Thursday, Friday and Saturday and open play Thursday morning at 9 a.m. against Grapevine.

The junior varsity girls crushed Arlington’s JV 55-9, to run their record to 2-1. Chandler Spooner had 8 points while Bailey Lankford and Melissa Hawkins both added 7 to help their team secure the win.

Roos open season in match against Sam Houston

The Weatherford boy’s basketball season began Tuesday against Arlington Sam Houston. Both freshman teams were victorius, as well as the junior varsity, who came away with a 41-38 win. Leading scorer was Jarrett Freeman with 20 points followed by Micah Blanton with 10 points.

The varsity Roos came up short, losing 62-56. Nick Farmer led all scorers with 20 points, followed by Blake Hannah with 12 and Shawn Houlihan with 11. Blake Hannah also led the game with 10 rebounds. The Kangaroos take the rest of the week off and return to action at Birdville, Tuesday.

Lady Hounds resume state run Thursday in San Marcos

The Peaster Lady Hounds volleyball team matches up in a state semifinal playoff game Thursday at 3 p.m. at Texas State University's Strahan Coliseum.

Poolville cagers beat Honey Grove in opener

The Poolville Monarch Varsity Boys got off to a good start for the 2009-10 Season with a win over the Honey Grove Warriors. The Monarchs jumped out to a 14-4 first quarter lead, and never looked back, winning by a score of 59-34. Poolville was led by John Burns with 25 points and seven rebounds. Trevor Scroggins added 14 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. John Hardin also chipped in seven points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Other scorers for the Monarchs were Mason McFarland and Blaine Hicks with four points each, Ty Hamlin with three and Jun Samayo with two.

Poolville head coach Steven Stegall said, “The boys knew the bus ride over and the lack of fans they would have because of the distance of the game would be obstacles to overcome. They were up to the challenge.”

Mavs’ Nowitzki hits fall-away for OT winner

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Dirk Nowitzki hit a fall-away 18-footer as time expired in overtime to give the Dallas Mavericks a 115-113 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday night.

With 3.1 seconds left, Nowitzki caught a pass from Jason Kidd, who finished a point short of a triple-double, and threw it up over Luc Richard Mbah a Moute. The ball rattled off the rim and backboard, dropping softly through the hoop as the backboard lights came on. The play was briefly reviewed, but counted.

Nowitzki, who finished with 32 points and 11 rebounds, immediately untucked his jersey and celebrated with his teammates near the Mavericks’ bench.

Bucks rookie Brandon Jennings finished with 25 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.

Support building for retiring Jordan’s number

NEW YORK (AP) — Magic Johnson would go along with LeBron James’ plan to have NBA players stop wearing No. 23.

James said last week he would change jersey numbers next season in honor of Michael Jordan, and said no other players should wear it, either.

Critics of his plan said other players before Jordan deserved the honor at least as much, with some using Johnson and Larry Bird as examples. But Johnson, speaking to a small group of reporters during a video conference, said if there was a decision to retire No. 23, he and Bird would “be the first ones to say it should happen.”

Quinn Fined for low hit

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Cleveland Browns quarterback Brady Quinn has been fined by the NFL for his low hit on Baltimore’s Terrell Suggs.

After throwing an interception in Monday night’s 16-0 loss to the Ravens, Quinn dived at Suggs’ knees while trying to bring down cornerback Chris Carr, who had picked him off. Suggs had to leave the game and could miss significant playing time.

Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis accused Quinn of a cheap shot.

By the break on Wednesday, the Weatherford College women had established a solid lead over McLennan College at the Crumm Graber Athletic Center, and showed no signs of letting up, extending their lead to a 30-point margin midway through the second half.

WHS soccer evens district record with win over Lamar

Staff Report

The Weatherford High School boys soccer teams traveled to Arlington to take on Lamar in District 4-5A play. In varsity action, the Roos came out focused and sharp offensively, scoring three goals early en route to a 5-2 win. The Roos took the game by a final of 5-2.

Weatherford College cagers in mix at conference mid-point
While Saturday's wins over Temple College by the Weatherford College men and women provided Nos. 759 and 800 in the record book for WC head coach Bob McKinley, they also provided a boost for the Coyotes squads as they head into the last half of North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) play.

New designation, same foes for WHS
Despite rumblings of a major shake up in the Class 5A infrastructure for the next two years, the University Interscholastic League (UIL), for good or bad, chose indifference regarding plans to create a Class 6A. As alignments for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 UIL seasons were announced Thursday, most area schools were affected in varying degrees, but none less than Weatherford High School.

Not to be outdone by the Lady Coyotes late-inning heroics in their opener last week, the Weatherford College baseball team had plenty of drama in its opener, as well, as it launched a final-inning 3-run barrage to beat defending national champion Navarro College, 8-7.
