SAN MARCOS — For the past several weeks of postseason, the Peaster Lady Hounds managed to come back and triumph from disadvantages. In Thursday night’s Class 2A state quarterfinal game, the sand ran out of Peaster’s hourglass, as the Lady Hounds fell to Aubrey in four games, 25-15, 23-25, 18-25, 26-28, at Shahan Colliseum at Texas State University - San Marcos.
“I told the girls that ‘hey, we were here. Out of 180-something teams, we were part of the top four,’” said Peaster head coach Dianna French. “We played hard, all of the games were close, and there is no shame.”
The Lady Hounds started off with a 4-1 advantage, which quickly evaporated when Aubrey scored three unanswered points to tie the contest. Peaster jumped ahead again, when Mary Allen and Randi Barnett combined for a wall at the net against the Lady Chaparral hitters. Allen followed with a solo block to give the Lady Hounds a 10-7 advantage.
It was the beginning if a 4-0 run for Peaster, capped off by Skye Daugherty’s hit off a defender’s hands and out of bounds.
The senior, one of four, would finish with 13 kills, outplayed only by teammate Haney, who had 14.
Aubrey would rebound, closing the gap to one, before Daugherty’s second kill of the game gave Peaster a little more breathing room.
The Lady Hounds hit a streak of good fortune, when the Lady Chaparrals hit three straight spike attempts out of bounds, making it 19-14.
Courtney Haney’s two aces helped Peaster along its 5-0 run, and the momentum stayed on the Lady Hounds’ side of the court as they finished off the first game, 25-15.
Allen’s hit down the sideline helped Peaster get out to a 5-3 start of Game 2. Aubrey, with pressure on, came back with a vengeance, helped along the way by three consecutive hitting errors. A three-point margin separated the two teams until Peaster caught a break on a lift call, and the Lady Chaparrals added two mishits for a 14-all game.
Aubrey took a small lead, but the Lady Hounds were there nipping at the heels, as Peaster rallied from 23-20 to within a point. The run fell short, as did the Lady Hounds, with Aubrey taking the game, 25-23.
In the third game, the Lady Chaparrals broke out of the gates with a 5-3 lead, increasing their lead as Peaster caught itself in a scoring slump. The Lady Hounds would give up five straight before Allen’s kill connected, but Aubrey kept the pressure, going up by as many as six.
The Lady Hounds refused to back down, however, wheedling the deficit down to one. It was the last bright spot of the game for Peaster, as the teams switched places from Game 1, and Aubrey moving on 25-18.
Poised for the kill and the match, the Lady Chaparrals scored first and never looked back. With one exception, Aubrey led the majority of the game, until Peaster bonded back to tie it at 19 as Daugherty’s kill split its defenders.
The Lady Hounds stayed in the game, matching point for point with the Lady Chaparrals but despite the effort, ultimately came up short, 28-26.
Peaster finishes the season 36-5, and will graduate four seniors — Haney, Daugherty, Barnett and Shayla Colliflower.
“It was a great season, and I don’t think anyone expected us to get this far. We had so many issues at the beginning of the season,” French said. “I’m so proud of their will and their drive and their heart. The result wasn’t what we wanted, but they still earned respect.”
