Perhaps it was the experience, perhaps it was the motivation. Maybe both. Whatever the reason, the Weatherford Lady Roos had an answer for everything Tuesday night, when they defeated Mineral Wells at Roos Gymnasium, 76-30.
Without their head coach Mike Miller, who suffered a small stroke earlier in the week, Weatherford pulled together for its sixth straight win of the season.
The Lady Roos wasted no time getting started, as Shaina Jenkins made back-to-back field goals for a 4-0 lead. Within the first two minutes, Weatherford had exploded with six more points for a 10-0 romp. The scoring slaughter continued, as the Lady Roos scored 16 unanswered before Mineral Wells could get on the board.
Mackenzie Lankford’s three-pointer pushed the deficit into the 20’s. Still on a scorching pace, Ashley Bosley banged in a score from beyond the arc to make it 29-2 at the end of the first quarter.
The Weatherford offense fell off pace slightly, as Mineral Wells scored 14 in the second quarter. The defense held strong still, forcing six more turnovers on the Lady Rams.
Using fast break points, as well as capitalizing on turnovers, Paulina Province’s first basket of the game helped Weatherford reach the 30-point deficit mark, 42-12 with two minutes in the first half.
The plunders continued for the Lady Rams after halftime, as the hole grew deeper and deeper.
A Lankford three-pointer capped off a 6-0 run for Weatherford to start the third quarter. Bosley and Ashley Babineaux combined for back-to-back three-pointers to help along the surge and propel the Lady Roos to a 59-21 lead late in the half.
All 12 Weatherford players go into the scoring party. Jenkins led the way, totaling 16 points for the Lady Roos. Amy Manley added 12 points, while Lankford scored nine points in the contest.
Next up, the Lady Roos travel to Bryan next Friday after a week off.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
