Staff Report
Of the four Parker County volleyball teams that made the playoffs, it was the Peaster Lady Greyhounds who outlasted most of the teams in Texas. The Lady Hounds advanced all the way to the state tournament, falling in four games to Aubrey in the Class 2A Division II Quarterfinals.
Because of the journey and the success, Peaster head coach Dianna French heads the Democrat’s 2009 All-Parker County volleyball team as Coach of the Year.
Peaster setter/hitter Courtney Haney heads up the athletes as the Most Valuable Player. The senior was named District 6-2A’s MVP, as well as a selection to the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-State volleyball team. She was also chosen to play on the Texas High School Girls All-Star team in Arlington this summer. For Peaster, Haney racked up 542 kills, along with 449 assists as setter.
Weatherford’s Mackenzie Lankford was named All-Parker County’s Hitter of the Year. The Lady Roo senior has racked up numerous awards since her freshman year, including 2007 District 3-5A’s Newcomer of the Year. This season, she was named the District 3-5A’s Outstanding Hitter, her second straight award. Lankford had 377 kills in 96 games. She also had 32 aces and 45 block for the Lady Roos.
Aledo’s Kendall Naquin takes the spot as the Parker County Blocker of the Year. The 6-foot senior had 120 blocks at the net for the Ladycats, to go along with 233 kills and 39 aces from the service line. She was also a District 6-4A First Team selection.
Aledo teammate Tara Gough was selected as the APC’s Setter of the Year. The senior assisted in 991 kills for the Ladycats, adding 109 kills of her own. She also had 320 digs and 57 blocks on the year. For her efforts, Gough was also District 6-4A’s Setter of the Year.
The emergence of Weatherford’s Calen Bratcher and Peaster’s Mary Allen made an impact on each athlete’s respective team. For their efforts, the duo was named Co-Newcomers of the Year. Bratcher, a junior and the Lady Roo libero, had 328 digs on the backrow for Weatherford. She was a unanimous selection as District 3-5A’s Newcomer of the Year. Allen, a junior for the Lady Hounds, was a force as Peaster’s outside hitter. A District 6-2A Newcomer of the Year selection, Allen had 216 kills in 131 games, along with 123 blocks at the net.
