Aledo moves to quarterfinal round with win over Hereford
MIDLAND — Hereford's defense held off the Aledo Bearcats' offensive attack for a quarter Saturday, in a Class 4A Region I playoff game at Grande Communications Stadium, but just barely. Aledo running back Johnathan Gray scored on a 7-yard run on the first play in the second quarter, providing a spark to an eventual 35-13 branding of the Whitefaces.
Though Hereford's first offensive series produced three first downs to try to take the early lead, a 9-yard sack of the Whitefaces' quarterback Parker Bridwell, followed by an incompletion, forced Hereford to punt in its only possession of the opening period. The stalled drive proved to be Hereford's best shot at a productive set of plays until the fourth quarter.
"That's what it's always been about at Aledo, is good defense," said Aledo head coach Tim Buchanan. "[Defensive] Coaches [Steve] Wood and [Daniel] Seay stuck with the plan and made a few adjustments, which kept them out of the end zone for most of the game."
After the Bearcats broke the ice with the second-quarter score, they scored on their next four possessions, taking apart the Hereford defense with Gray's runs and the passing of sophomore signal caller Matthew Bishop.
Gray followed up his initial scoring jaunt with another run of two yards, and received a toss from Bishop for nine yards to end the scoring before the half, going into the locker room with a 21-0 lead over the Whitefaces.
In the third quarter, Bishop connected with tight end Forrest Cook for the longest scoring toss of the day, a 65-yarder.
The long drive to west Texas seems to have little effect on the Bearcats, as they got off the bus looking sharp.
"To get [the boys] up so early," said Buchanan, "and have a heck of a drive, a five-hour trip, the longest drive by far we've had this year, I was impressed how well our boys played early in the game."
Aledo, the regional champions, will enjoy a short bus ride Saturday, as they meet Everman at Burleson Stadium.

WHS wrestlers place second in district meet, nine headed to regional tourney
Over the weekend the Weatherford High School wrestling team traveled to Saginaw for the 8-5A district wrestling championships. The Kangaroos had a very strong showing at the meet. As a team, the Roos finished second overall, only behind state-ranked Azle High School.

Staff Report
Weatherford improved to 9-2 in District 3-5A with a 56-41 win over the Haltom Lady Buffs, Friday. Building a six-point lead by the end of the opening period, the Lady Roos held the lead and pulled away in the final quarter with a 14-7 scoring edge.
