After a tough night and a long trip back from West Texas on Wednesday, the Weatherford College Lady Coyotes used Thursday to work out some frustrations and renew some resolve heading into the holiday break. The WC women did so at the expense of the Bacone JV Lady Warriors, picking up momentum midway through the opening half, then running away with a 102-54 win.
“We got to run quite a bit, got everyone in the game and had some good feedback,” said Weatherford College head coach Bob McKinley. “It helps overshadow last night’s game a bit. We played badly against Midland, but at the same time found out they are a beatable team.”
Shameka Lunford led the charge for WC, scoring 20 points while dominating inside play.
“One of the things I’m pleased with at this point is we’re getting better with our three post players,” McKinley said. “Shameka gets better every time she plays, and she has an unbelievable up side to her game. “She hasn’t played in two years, so as her conditioning and fundamentals improve, she will keep getting better. Coach [Reda] Petraitis has been working with her, Monica McGill and Kaneisha Benjamin and they are probably going to carry us pretty well.”
The Lady Coyotes’ guards outpaced the Bacone backcourt throughout the game, helping the runaway. Tiffany Halliway put up 15 points, while Andre’a Davis added 13. Trisha Tuck, draining three 3-pointers, rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12.
Without their full crew available, the Lady Coyotes look to get even better by the time conference play begins. Sophomore Saule Kontautaite sat out Thursday, while all 11 available players had playing time in the blowout.
“Saule makes a tremendous difference on our team, the way she moves, shoots and passes the ball,” said McKinley. “This was really kind of a fun game for us and I appreciate the Bacone people letting their JV team come down here. That was a five-hour trip for them, but we had a long trip from Midland last night, too.”
With the post players shoring up the inside in prep for conference play, which begins against Hill College on Jan. 6, McKinley is very confident the guard situation is in good hands.
“In our backcourt, I think Kosandra [Foreman] may be as good a point guard as there is,” he said. “She does an awesome job for us.
“If we could ever get to a point where we shoot the ball as consistently as we did tonight, I think we’ll be in great shape.”
The WC women play one more game before taking a few weeks off for the holiday break. The Lady Coyotes travel to Athens Monday to meet Trinity Valley.
