The 'bigs' are back as Coyotes thump Warriors

The Weatherford Coyotes enjoyed access to the entire roster Thursday, as they trounced Bacone’s JV squad at the Betty Jo Crumm Graber Center, 112-65.

The offense looks to be in good shape, with scorers aplenty adorning the Coyotes starting lineup and bench. Defensively, WC will have some work to do, but now has all the tools in place before the conference schedule begins.

“Our defense is coming along now that we’ve gotten our ‘bigs’ back,” said Weatherford College head coach Dave Donnelly. “Two of them have been out for about three weeks. Tonight was the first time Beas Hamga has played all year, and he just started practicing two days ago.

“He’s a little ‘gun shy’ right now after having his knee scoped and Samuel Hughes has been out with an ankle injury. I kind of threw them both into the fire tonight.”

WC was hot from the opening tip, jumping to a 10-point lead before five minutes had elapsed in the opening period. Sammy Yeager and Kendall Durant lead the offensive display, driving the lanes and draining threes throughout the contest. Yeager finished as the game’s leading scorer, with 30 points. Durant was on a similar pace, ending the night with 29.

The ‘bigs’ made their presence felt, dominating the boards and denying the Warriors access to the lanes.

“It’s good to have them back,” Donnelly said. “We’ll have a different kind of rotation now that we have our big guys [available], and get them used to working with our guards.

“We just need some repetition to get our bigs to get used to sliding over when the guards execute a blow-by in the lane. They just need to get a feel for each other now that everyone is back.”

Donnelly is looking forward to the prospect of getting all the elements practice and playing time, anticipating the current level of production will only get better.

“We’re a pretty good shooting team right now and that should just improve,” he said, “because our big guys are good shooters, too.

“And they are very unselfish with the ball, which helps open up the floor. We did a good job tonight of moving the ball around and making the extra pass.”

With the Bacone rout behind them, the Coyotes get back to more notable competition to close out the calendar year. With three more contests in the coming week, WC will try to take advantage of the time together to enhance the melding of their talents before conference play begins. The Coyotes open against Hill on Jan. 6.

“We have South Plains this weekend, and they are a top-20 team,” Donnelly said. “This will be our fifth game against teams ranked at that level. We’ll work in the guys that have been out, but our thing right now is getting ready for January. After our [holiday] break, we’ll come back and have about a week to get ready for conference play.”

Donnelly is anxious to get into the season.

“I’m really excited about this team,” he said. “We have a good inside and perimeter game, and coming into this year, everyone was new, except for two players. Bringing these guys together has worked well. We have a real good team chemistry in this group.”
