Lady Roos off to good start with District 3-5A win

Weatherford varsity softball opened district play on Tuesday, with an impressive win over Arlington Bowie. Despite a shaky defensive start, allowing the Lady Vols to score a pair of runs in the first frame, the defense shut out Bowie the rest of the contest.

The Lady Roos’ offensive power dominated the rest of the game, totalling nine hits on the night, with senior Tawnye Bramlett hitting for the cycle, with a single, double, triple, and a home run. Sophomore pitcher Kelsey O’Brien pitched a solid district-opener for the WHS girls.

The Lady Roos are currently 10-2 on the season (1-0 in district play), with their next district outing on Tuesday, traveling to play Arlington Martin at Workman Field.

Roos baseball earns 6-0 start

The Weatherford varsity baseball team began their 2013 campaign with a bang last weekend, going 6-0 to win the Jerry Durant Classic Tournament, the annual kickoff to the Roos’ season.

WHS outscored their opponents with a 55-13 run margin in the tournament. Kangaroo pitchers Beau Burrows, Matt Riney, Grayson Huffman, Will Young, Andrew Healy and Andy Swain collected wins over the 3-day affair. The Weatherford offense was bolstered by hitters Dustin Williams, Mitchell Dworsky, Andrew Healy, Cory Bynum, Brock Riebe, Andy Rogers, Will Young and Tony Rodriguez.

The Roos have another busy three days of baseball ahead, traveling to Burleson and Crowley for another 3-day rotational event.

WHS collects medals galore at home meet

The Weatherford varsity girls track team finished third in last weekend’s Roo Relays.

Standout athletes in track and field included Madison Gaston, with a third-place finish in the 100-meters, second in the 200-meters and another third in the long jump. Ronni Middleton placed fourth in both the mile and the 2-mile runs. Mady Young took second in both the 400-meter and 800-meter runs and helped her team win first place in the 4x400-meter relay. Sarah Calhoon placed second in the discus throw. Freshman Madison Cooley had a productive meet, taking first in both the 400-meter and 800-meter run, second in the long jump, and was on the 4x400-meter relay team taking first.

The varsity boys placed second in the meet as a team, missing out on the top prize by a single point. Standouts for the Roos included Jaakan Norwood, first in the 200-meter sprint and a member of the second-place 4x400-meter relay team. Fred Brownlee sped to second in the 100-meter race and fourth in the 200-meters. Carson Terrell did well in the hurdles, placing fifth in the 110-meters and second in the 300-meters. Seth Cooke took gold in the 400-meter race, a second in the 800-meters and was part of the team with a second-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. Jordan Simmons ran on all three WHS relay teams, who all placed for points.

In the field events, Grant Werts topped the field in the discus throw, with Jonathan Mitchell winning the high jump competition and taking fourth in the long jump. Elliott Lancaster also had a busy, and successful day, with a second in long jump, a fifth in triple jump and earned a third-place medal as part of the 4x200-meter relay team.

The junior varsity girls’ team tied for first in the meet, with stellar performances by Connor Mackenzie, Maddie Dorris, Jenna Ford, Jessica Chipelesa, Caroline Langston and Auburn Staples, among others.

The JV boys’ team topped its division, with contributions from top performers Michael Suttle, Keegan Brangham, Tucker Cargill, Truett Miller and the members of all three relay teams.

Next up for Weatherford track is the Rams relays on Saturday, in Mineral Wells.

Weatherford varsity, JV netters show out at Mansfield meet

The WHS varsity and junior varsity tennis team competed in a 16-team field at the Mansfield High School Tournament last Friday, bringing home an abundance of medals.

Gaby de Leon led the Roos with a first-place finish in the varsity B girls singles. Kelsey Buczkowski earned a fifth place in varsity A girls singles. The girls’ varsity doubles teams also did well, with Katie Gremminger and Alia Gammon earning second among the A girls, with Sarah Rhodes and Alessa Hoerner also taking second in the B-girls group.

Jared Waller and Morrow Nichols earned a third place finish in B mixed doubles.

In boys’ B singles, Trey Vaszauskas captured third place, and Kristian Gonzales took fifth among the varsity A singles.

Emily ‘Chuck’ Norris was the winner of the top singles prize among the JV A-girls’ group, with Erin Luke and Shannon Welch taking first place in junior varsity A-girls doubles.

The varsity team returns to the courts on Friday, traveling to compete at Chisholm Trail High School.

Williams slugs way to APC’s Most Valuable
About the only negative you could conger from the season Roos Dustin Williams had was that the senior first baseman did not get to finish it. Helping Weatherford get back to yet another postseason, a clock-work occurrence for the Kangaroos after district baseball is done, Williams’ mishap in a late-district contest took him out of the lineup.

MLB squads draft four Coyotes, two Weatherford College exes
Like many talented players, Hunter Lockwood opted to play junior college baseball in hopes of being taken in the Major League Baseball draft. He transferred to Weatherford College after one season at the University of Oklahoma, where he tied for second in the Big 12 with 11 home runs, and was named to the All-Freshman Team.
