Defense denies South Hills in 49-0 romp by Bearcats

FORT WORTH —

FORT WORTH — The Aledo offense really did not need much help on Thursday, in a District 7-4A match against Fort Worth South Hills, but it got some, anyway.

With the Scorpions threatening to narrow a 28-point deficit with their first drive of the second half, junior linebacker Jordan Mittie scooped up a loose ball and ran the distance for an 85-yard touchdown return. The defensive score represented the first for the Bearcats, who went on to trounce the Scorpions at Scarborough-Handley Field, 49-0.

Aledo began the scoring on the first possession of the game, overcoming some penalties in the process, when senior quarterback Pate Davis found wideout John Whatley with a 15-yard TD pass. Despite unattractive field position in most of the opening half, the Bearcats scored on each of its next three offensive series, taking a 28-0 lead into the locker room.

With fellow running back Caleb Frysinger on the sideline for the night, sophomore RB Jess Anders (12 carries, 142 yards) took care of most of the running duties, and gave the South Hills defenders fits.

Aledo improves its district record to 2-0 (4-1 overall) and will take advantage of a long week before returning  to action next Friday. The Bearcats will host FW O.D. Wyatt on Homecoming Night.
