Lady Coyotes set for Region V run

—

By GREG WEBB

If poll rankings meant anything, and were always spot on, Saturday’s National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA)Region V Women’s final would see Weatherford College and Midland College facing off for the regional championship, and Midland would win in the final.

But fortunately, the real world (of the NJCAA) requires that games be played, and the Region V tourney will pit the top four teams from the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) against their Western conference counterparts.

At 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the top-seed WC Lady Coyotes take the floor against fourth-seed Odessa at Lubbock Christian University’s Rip Griffin Center, to begin its postseason play. But Odessa’s fourth seed is nothing to be taken too lightly.

With a 10-4 final conference record the Lady Wranglers finished a mere one game behind the co-champions of the WJCAC — all three of them. It was crowded at the top of the conference out west, with a major fall-off for the rest of the competition. So, even with Midland holding a No. 14 ranking — if rankings mean anything — there may not be a major competitive decrease from the one seed, down.

The Lady Coyotes, ranked at No. 19 in the NJCAA, Div. I poll, and a fixture in the Region V tourney more often than not, are well aware of the one-and-done threat of the tournament. WC enters the fray this year with a string of eight wins to close out conference play, and were within three points of a conference sweep.

The women take off on Thursday, resuming bracket play on Friday, with the championship set for 2 p.m., Saturday. The tournament games will be available for viewing at www.psblive.com.
